1 sprig fresh basil, plus 2 tablespoons chopped fresh basil leaves
1 cup fresh ricotta
1 pound dried ziti
10 ounces jarred or frozen artichoke hearts (thawed)

A lady I worked with brought this in one day, and it was a hit. Now it is the favorite of all my dinner guests. It's great for a covered dish dinner too. I have made this also without the meat, and it is well received.

TANGY BAKED ZITI

Tangy Baked Ziti image

I'm not a big fan of ricotta, so when I found this recipe, I had to try it. I'm so glad I did! While not a pronounced flavor, the sour cream adds a creaminess to the recipe. A big hit with my picky son! I leave out the ground beef for my vegetarian DH.

Time 1h5m

Yield 8 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 8

1 lb dry ziti pasta
1 onion, chopped
1 lb lean ground beef
2 (26 ounce) jars spaghetti sauce
6 ounces provolone cheese, sliced
1 1/2 cups sour cream
6 ounces mozzarella cheese, shredded
2 tablespoons grated parmesan cheese

Steps:

  • Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil; Add ziti pasta, and cook until al dente, about 8 minutes; drain.
  • In a large skillet, brown onion and ground beef over medium heat; Add spaghetti sauce, and simmer 15 minutes.
  • Preheat the oven to 350F (175C).
  • Butter a 9x13 inch baking dish.
  • Layer as follows: 1/2 of the ziti, Provolone cheese, sour cream, 1/2 sauce mixture, remaining ziti, mozzarella cheese and remaining sauce mixture; Top with grated Parmesan cheese.
  • Bake for 30 minutes in the preheated oven, or until cheeses are melted.

Tips:

  • Use a good quality provolone cheese for the best flavor. Freshly grated cheese is always best, but you can also use pre-shredded cheese if you're short on time.
  • If you don't have ziti pasta, you can use another type of short pasta, such as penne or rotini.
  • Be sure to cook the pasta al dente, which means it should be tender but still have a slight bite to it.
  • Don't overcrowd the baking dish. If you're using a 9x13 inch dish, you should be able to fit all of the ingredients in without having to pack them in too tightly.
  • Bake the ziti bake until the cheese is melted and bubbly and the pasta is heated through. This should take about 20-25 minutes.
  • Let the ziti bake cool for a few minutes before serving. This will help the cheese to set and make it easier to cut and serve.

Conclusion:

Provolone ziti bake is a delicious and easy-to-make dish that is perfect for a weeknight meal or a casual gathering. With its creamy cheese sauce, tender pasta, and crispy breadcrumb topping, this dish is sure to be a hit with everyone at the table.
