Steps:
- Brown beef in frying pan, drain.
- Combine with all other ingredients in slow cooker/crockpot, or cook in large pot on stove.
- For slow cooker, cook on Low for 5-7 hours. For stovetop, simmer on low heat for 1-2 hours.
Tips:
- Choose the right cut of beef: Chuck roast, brisket, and short ribs are all good choices for beef stew. These cuts are tough and full of flavor, and they become tender when cooked slowly in liquid.
- Brown the beef before stewing: Browning the beef adds flavor and color to the stew. It also helps to seal in the juices, so the beef stays tender.
- Use a variety of vegetables: Carrots, celery, and onions are classic stew vegetables, but you can also add other vegetables like potatoes, parsnips, or turnips. Root vegetables add sweetness to the stew, while leafy greens like kale or spinach add color and nutrients.
- Use a flavorful liquid: Beef broth or stock is the traditional liquid for beef stew, but you can also use red wine, beer, or even tomato juice. The liquid you choose will add flavor and depth to the stew.
- Season the stew well: Salt, pepper, and garlic are essential seasonings for beef stew. You can also add other spices and herbs, such as thyme, rosemary, or bay leaves.
- Simmer the stew for at least 1 hour: The longer you simmer the stew, the more tender the beef will become. You can cook the stew in a slow cooker or on the stovetop.
- Serve the stew with crusty bread or mashed potatoes: Beef stew is a hearty and satisfying meal that is perfect for a cold winter day. Serve it with crusty bread or mashed potatoes to soak up the delicious sauce.
