WALNUT, RAISIN, APPLE BARS
I made these yesterday and took them to a Labor Day Cookout and everyone thought they were delicious. I got the recipe from Family Circle Magazine, but I made a few changes. It called for dried apples but I used fresh ones and it didn't have walnuts in it, which I think goes so well with apples. This is going to be a keeper

RAISIN-WALNUT BARS
So Very Good !! The filling is chewy, moist and delicious. Kind of reminds me of Pecan Pie, not the taste, but the texture.

Steps:
- 1. Blend one cup flour, butter, 1/4 cup brown sugar and 1/4 teaspoon salt with a pastry blender or 2 knives until mixture is evenly combined. Pat into bottom of a 13" x 9" baking pan. Bake at 325 degrees for 15 minutes or until golden.
- 2. Mix remaining brown sugar, eggs, remaining flour, vanilla, baking powder, ginger or cinnamon and remaining salt in a medium bowl. Stir in walnuts and raisins. Pour raisin mixture over hot crust.
- 3. Bake an additional 20 to 25 minutes until top is golden and set. Cool completely and cut into bars.
Tips:
- Using a food processor can expedite the process of finely chopping the walnuts.
- Softened butter incorporates more easily into the dough; microwave it for approximately 10 seconds if it is too firm.
- Chilling the dough for at least 30 minutes facilitates easier handling and prevents spreading during baking.
- To achieve an even golden-brown color, rotate the baking pan halfway through the baking process.
- Allow the bars to cool completely before slicing to ensure clean and neat cuts.
- Store the bars in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or in the freezer for up to 2 months.
