Lemon Barley water is an old fashioned British tonic that was given to the weak as an alternative source of nourishment. Now most people just drink it because they like it! Some recipes use sugar in their recipes however honey gives it a more intense flavor. If you have any fresh ginger handy, finely grate about 1 tablespoon of it and boil it with the barley for a gingery kick. Found on the internet. Enjoy!

Time 2m

Yield 1 pitcher, 6 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 5

1 navel orange, sliced
1 lemon, sliced
2 quarts water
ice
of fresh mint

Steps:

  • First, slice your lemon and orange in thin slices (about 8 for each).
  • Fill your pitcher half way up with ice.
  • Add your lemon and orange slices. (in a decorative manner).
  • Fill with your water (I use bottled).
  • Pour in a glass filled with ice and about 5 mint leaves.

Tips:

  • Choose high-quality barley: Opt for hulled barley or pearl barley for a nutty flavor and chewy texture. Rinse the barley thoroughly before cooking to remove any impurities.
  • Use fresh lemons: Freshly squeezed lemon juice adds a vibrant citrus flavor to the barley water. Avoid using bottled lemon juice, as it may not have the same tangy taste.
  • Add natural sweeteners: If you prefer a sweeter barley water, add natural sweeteners like honey, maple syrup, or stevia. Adjust the amount of sweetener to your liking.
  • Infuse with herbs and spices: For a more flavorful barley water, infuse it with herbs like mint, basil, or lemongrass. You can also add spices like ginger, cardamom, or cinnamon for a warm and comforting taste.
  • Chill before serving: Allow the barley water to cool completely before refrigerating it for at least 2 hours or overnight. This chilling process enhances the flavors and makes the barley water refreshing.

Conclusion:

Lemon barley water is a versatile and refreshing beverage that offers numerous health benefits. Its combination of barley, lemon, and water provides essential nutrients, promotes hydration, and aids in various bodily functions. Whether you enjoy it plain or infused with herbs and spices, lemon barley water is a delicious and healthy addition to your daily routine.
