The Original Rice Krispies Treats Squares image

This is the recipe for the original rice krispies treats squares...It never fails! Plus, it is a great way to use up a box of cereal! For best results, use fresh marshmallows. I have replaced the butter once with Mott's Healthy Baking butter or oil substitute (it was basically an unsweetened apple sauce) and they still turned out great!

Number Of Ingredients 4

3 tablespoons butter or margarine
1 package (10-ounces) JET-PUFFED Marshmallows
4 cups JET-PUFFED Miniature Marshmallows
6 cups Rice Krispies®

Steps:

  • In large saucepan melt butter over low heat. Add marshmallows and stir until completely melted. Remove from heat. Add Kellogg's Rice Krispies cereal. Stir until well coated. Using buttered spatula or wax paper evenly press mixture into 13 x 9 x 2-inch pan coated with cooking spray. Cool. Cut into 2-inch squares. Best if served the same day. Microwave directions: In microwave-safe bowl heat butter and marshmallows on HIGH for 3 minutes, stirring after 2 minutes. Stir until smooth. Follow steps 2 and 3 above. Microwave cooking times may vary. Tips: For best results, use fresh marshmallows. 1 jar (7-ounces) marshmallow crème can be substituted for marshmallows.

Tips:

  • Use fresh marshmallows. Stale marshmallows will not melt properly and will make your treats tough.
  • Do not overcook the marshmallows. Overcooked marshmallows will make your treats hard and chewy.
  • Butter your hands before handling the marshmallow mixture. This will prevent the mixture from sticking to your hands.
  • Work quickly when shaping the treats. The marshmallow mixture will start to set quickly, so you need to work fast.
  • If the mixture is too sticky, add a little more powdered sugar.
  • Store the treats in an airtight container at room temperature. They will keep for up to two weeks.
