We invented this recipe one night after one of us wanted Tater Tot® casserole for supper, while the other wanted Mexican...It's SUPER easy and SUPER yummy! Baking the Tater Tots® before layering may be unnecessary but we wanted to make sure they had a chance to crisp up. The whole family LOVED this dish! Hope you do too!

PETE'S FRENCH FRY SEASONING

Pete's French Fry Seasoning image

This is a recipe my husband created when we were out of all season salt, now when frying up tator tots or french fries we only use this seasoning mix!! Since we don't have a deep fryer, we usually pan fry our tator tots and then toss them with this seasoning. They taste awesome!! We use sea salt so that the sodium isn't as high. If you choose to use regular salt you may need to adjust the amount of salt added to get the right taste. Also tastes great on hashbrowns or diced potatoes!!

Categories     Low Protein

Time 5m

Yield 8-10 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 8

1 1/2 teaspoons coarse sea salt
1/2 teaspoon dry onion
1/2 teaspoon cajun seasoning or 1/2 teaspoon creole seasoning
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon thyme
1/8 teaspoon Old Bay Seasoning
1/8 teaspoon white pepper

Steps:

  • Mix all ingredients together in a small bowl.
  • Sprinkle over pan-fried or deep-fried tator tots, french fries, or hashbrowns.
  • Note: Makes enough to cover a 2 lb. bag of tator tots or french fries.

Tips:

  • Choose the right potatoes: Russet potatoes are the best choice for tater tots because they are starchy and hold their shape well. Look for potatoes that are firm and smooth, without any blemishes or sprouts.
  • Grate the potatoes finely: This will help the tater tots to cook evenly. You can use a food processor or a box grater to grate the potatoes.
  • Season the potatoes well: Don't be afraid to add plenty of salt, pepper, and other seasonings to the potatoes. This will help to give them flavor.
  • Chill the potatoes before frying: This will help them to hold their shape better. You can chill the potatoes for up to 30 minutes before frying.
  • Fry the tater tots in hot oil: The oil should be at least 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Fry the tater tots in batches until they are golden brown and crispy.
  • Serve the tater tots immediately: Tater tots are best served hot and crispy. You can serve them with your favorite dipping sauce, such as ketchup, mayonnaise, or ranch dressing.

Conclusion:

Tater tots are a delicious and versatile side dish that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. They are easy to make and can be customized to your liking. With a little creativity, you can create unique and flavorful tater tot dishes that will impress your friends and family. So next time you're looking for a fun and easy side dish, give tater tots a try.
