PERFECT CUT-OUT COOKIE DOUGH

Perfect Cut-Out Cookie Dough image

This recipe always comes out perfect. My toddlers and I make these often. I throw the dough together in the morning and let it sit in the fridge. I take it out at dinner time to let it warm just a bit, and we roll them out and ice them after for dessert. You use different flavors of extract and add spices. For fall, I use maple extract and add cinnamon and nutmeg. I use my mixer to prepare dough and it comes together super easy.

Time 42m

Yield 1 dozen

Number Of Ingredients 9

3/4 cup butter
2/3 cup sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/4 teaspoon almond extract
2 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
cocoa powder (optional)

Steps:

  • Cream butter and sugar.
  • Add egg, vanilla, and almond extract.
  • Add sifted dry ingredients.
  • Remove 1/3 cup dough and tint it by stirring in a tablespoon or two of cocoa powder.
  • Refrigerate at least an hour to make dough easier to handle.
  • Form the dough into desired shapes.
  • Bake at 325 degrees on an ungreased cookie sheet for 12 to 16 minutes or until edges are lightly browned.
  • To Make Sheep:.
  • Shape dough into little balls from 1/8 inch to 1/2 inch.
  • Arrange white dough in ovals about 2 1/2 inches by 1 1/2 inches - as a wooly sheep.
  • Roll four little chocolate dough balls between your fingers to form legs and attach.
  • Form 1/2 inch chocolate ovals for heads. Add a bit of white dough for an eye.

Tips:

  • Use cold butter: Cold butter is easier to work with and will help the cookies keep their shape better.
  • Don't overmix the dough: Overmixing the dough will make the cookies tough. Mix just until the ingredients are combined.
  • Chill the dough: Chilling the dough for at least 30 minutes will help it firm up and make it easier to handle.
  • Roll out the dough evenly: Roll out the dough to a thickness of about 1/4 inch. If the dough is too thick, the cookies will be too dense. If the dough is too thin, the cookies will be too crispy.
  • Use cookie cutters: Use cookie cutters to cut out shapes from the dough. If you don't have cookie cutters, you can use a knife to cut the dough into shapes.
  • Bake the cookies until they are golden brown: The cookies should be baked for about 10-12 minutes, or until they are golden brown. If the cookies are baked for too long, they will be dry and crumbly.
  • Let the cookies cool: Let the cookies cool on a wire rack before serving. This will help them to set and firm up.

Sheep cookies, also known as sugar cookie dough, are a versatile and delicious treat that can be shaped into any form you desire.
