CROCK POT HAM BONE AND BEANS

Crock Pot Ham Bone and Beans image

Many variations to Ham Bone (or Hocks) and beans but this is pretty much how I remember it from my childhood. I find by not soaking the beans they have better texture and flavor.I use Great Northern Beans as my favorite choice of bean for this recipe. I have used 15 bean mix with good results just omit the ham flavor packet.

SLOW COOKER GREEN BEANS, HAM AND POTATOES

Slow Cooker Green Beans, Ham and Potatoes image

I make this dish often; I have never really measured the ingredients, but can give you a reasonable approximation. Note: Freeze leftover cooking liquid, and then add to bean soup, ham or cabbage dishes, or use to cook dumplings in. It's delicious!

Time 4h30m

Yield 10

Number Of Ingredients 9

2 pounds fresh green beans, rinsed and trimmed
1 large onion, chopped
3 ham hocks
1 ½ pounds new potatoes, quartered
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon seasoning salt
1 tablespoon chicken bouillon granules
ground black pepper to taste

Steps:

  • Halve beans if they are large, place in a slow cooker with water to barely cover, and add onion and ham hocks. Cover, and cook on High until simmering. Reduce heat to Low, and cook for 2 to 3 hours, or until beans are crisp but not done.
  • Add potatoes, and cook for another 45 minutes. While potatoes are cooking, remove ham hocks from slow cooker, and remove meat from bones. Chop or shred meat, and return to slow cooker. Season with garlic powder, onion powder, seasoning salt, bouillon, and pepper. Cook until potatoes are done, then adjust seasoning to taste.
  • To serve, use a slotted spoon to put beans, potatoes, and ham into a serving dish with a little broth.

Tips:

  • Choose the right ham hock. Look for a ham hock that is meaty and has a good amount of fat. This will help to flavor the beans and make them more hearty.
  • Soak the beans overnight. This will help to soften them and make them more digestible. If you don't have time to soak the beans overnight, you can quick-soak them by boiling them for 1 minute, then removing them from the heat and letting them stand for 1 hour.
  • Use a variety of beans. This will add flavor and texture to the dish. Some good choices include pinto beans, black beans, kidney beans, and navy beans.
  • Add vegetables to the pot. Vegetables such as carrots, celery, and onion will add flavor and nutrients to the dish. You can also add other vegetables, such as potatoes, corn, or green beans.
  • Season the beans well. Use a variety of spices and seasonings to flavor the beans. Some good choices include salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and chili powder.
  • Cook the beans on low heat for 6-8 hours. This will allow the beans to cook evenly and develop a rich flavor.
  • Serve the beans with cornbread or rice. This will make a hearty and satisfying meal.

Conclusion:

Crock pot ham hock and beans is a delicious and easy-to-make dish that is perfect for a weeknight meal. It is also a great way to use up leftover ham. With a few simple ingredients and a little time, you can have a pot of flavorful and hearty beans that the whole family will enjoy.
