FRESH, HOMEMADE APPLE JUICE

Fresh, Homemade Apple Juice image

My mother had a creative way of using the apple cores and peels leftover from making apple pie: to make homemade apple juice. Store-bought apple juice is tasty, but it has a strong, distinct flavor with almost a hint of bitterness. To those with sensitive palates, it can be a little strong at times. Homemade juice, however, tastes surprisingly different as it is lighter and pleasantly sweet without the kick. Besides using a juicer, this is a super-easy way of making apple juice.

HOT SPICED TEA FOR THE HOLIDAYS

Hot Spiced Tea for the Holidays image

This is an old family favorite, handed down from my great-grandmother. The holidays officially begin with Christmas carols and my favorite hot spiced tea! Definitely a seasonal comfort beverage for me! I prefer to use fresh juices with pulp. The flavors are different. Canned pineapple in light syrup is best. Set the pineapple chunks aside for the rest of your holiday baking. Store leftovers in refrigerator and reheat as needed.

Drunk without milk, this tea is 14 calories and has 0.5g fat. This Spiced Tea and the Spiced Coffee are both great low fat choices!

Tips:

  • Choose the right apples: Use a variety of apples that are good for juicing, such as Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Pink Lady. These apples are tart and juicy, which will give your tea a delicious flavor.
  • Wash your apples thoroughly: Before you juice the apples, be sure to wash them thoroughly to remove any dirt or pesticides. You can do this by rinsing them under cold water and scrubbing them with a clean produce brush.
  • Peel and core your apples: Once the apples are washed, you need to peel and core them. This will remove the skin and seeds, which can make your tea bitter.
  • Use a juicer: The best way to get the juice out of your apples is to use a juicer. If you don't have a juicer, you can also grate the apples and then strain the juice through a cheesecloth.
  • Add spices: To give your tea a little extra flavor, add some spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg, or cloves. You can also add a bit of honey or maple syrup for sweetness.
  • Serve warm or cold: Spiced apple juice tea can be served warm or cold. If you're serving it warm, heat it up in a saucepan over low heat until it's just simmering. If you're serving it cold, let it cool completely before serving.
