Provided by Trisha Yearwood

Categories     dessert

Time 55m

Yield 6 servings

Number Of Ingredients 8

1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
1 cup light brown sugar
2 refrigerated rolled pie crusts, such as Pillsbury
One 21-ounce can apple pie filling
2 tablespoons cinnamon sugar
2 cups whipping cream, chilled
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
4 tablespoons sugar

Steps:

  • For the skillet apple pie: Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.
  • Melt the butter in a 9-inch cast-iron skillet; set aside 1 tablespoon of the melted butter for the top crust. To the melted butter, add the brown sugar and melt them together on medium heat, about 2 minutes. Remove from the heat and line the skillet with one of the pie crusts. Pour the apple pie filling over the crust and sprinkle with 1 tablespoon of the cinnamon sugar. Use the second pie crust to cover the filling. Brush the top with the reserved melted butter, then evenly sprinkle the remaining 1 tablespoon cinnamon sugar on top. Cut vents in the middle of the pie. Bake for 30 minutes. Serve hot, topped with a generous dollop of cinnamon whipped cream.
  • For the cinnamon whipped cream: Chill a large metal mixing bowl and a wire beater attachment in the freezer for about 20 minutes. Pour the cream, cinnamon and sugar into the cold mixing bowl and beat until soft peaks form, 2 to 3 minutes; the mixture should hold its shape when dropped from a spoon. Don't overbeat or you'll have sweetened butter!

BUTTERY CINNAMON SKILLET APPLES

This is a simple delicious apple dessert that may easily be doubled if desired --- I like to also add in about 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg :)

Provided by Kittencalrecipezazz

Categories     Dessert

Time 27m

Yield 2-4 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 6

4 medium cooking apples
1/3 cup butter (no substitutions)
1/2-3/4 cup sugar
4 teaspoons cornstarch
1 1/2 cups water
1/4-1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

Steps:

  • Peel, core and cut apples in half.
  • In a skillet melt butter over medium heat.
  • Stir in the sugar, cornstarch and cinnamon; mix well then add in water.
  • Add in the apples to the sauce; cover and cook over medium heat, occasionally spooning the sauce over the apples as they cook.
  • Cook for 12-15 minutes until the apples are fork-tender and the sauce is thick.
  • To serve; place two apple halves in a dish, and ladle approximately 1/2 cup butter/cinnamon sauce over each serving.

Tips:

  • Choose the right apples: Use firm, tart apples like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp. These apples hold their shape well when cooked and have a nice balance of sweetness and acidity.
  • Slice the apples evenly: This will help them cook evenly. If the apple slices are too thick, they will take longer to cook and may not soften all the way through.
  • Use a large skillet: This will give the apples plenty of room to cook without overcrowding. If the apples are too crowded, they will steam instead of sautéing and will not brown properly.
  • Cook the apples over medium heat: This will help them caramelize and develop a nice golden brown color. If the heat is too high, the apples will burn.
  • Stir the apples frequently: This will help them cook evenly and prevent them from sticking to the pan.
  • Add the cinnamon and sugar: Once the apples are softened, add the cinnamon and sugar. Stir to coat the apples evenly.
  • Cook for a few more minutes: This will allow the cinnamon and sugar to caramelize and the apples to develop a delicious flavor.

Conclusion:

Skillet apples with cinnamon are an easy and delicious dessert that can be enjoyed on their own or served with ice cream, yogurt, or whipped cream. They are also a great addition to pancakes, waffles, or oatmeal. This recipe is simple to follow and can be easily customized to your liking. So next time you're looking for a quick and easy dessert, give skillet apples with cinnamon a try!
