SLOPPY JOES

Sloppy Joes image

This is my adaptation of my mom's yummy sloppy joe recipe. I like to toast the buns, as they hold together a little better when they are toasty. I usually make a double batch, which gives us enough for dinner with leftovers for lunch. Times are estimated. Tip: my DH loves to add a slice of cheddar cheese before placing the bun top on. They are pretty tasty that way!

Tips:

  • Choose the right ground beef: Opt for lean ground beef (80% lean or higher) to reduce grease and make the sloppy Joes healthier.
  • Brown the beef thoroughly: Cook the ground beef over medium heat, breaking it up into small pieces, until it's no longer pink. This ensures that the beef is cooked evenly and has a nice browned flavor.
  • Use a flavorful sauce: The sauce is what makes sloppy Joes so delicious, so don't skimp on the ingredients. Use a combination of ketchup, mustard, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, and spices to create a tangy, sweet, and savory sauce.
  • Simmer the sauce: Once the sauce is combined, let it simmer for at least 15 minutes. This allows the flavors to meld together and develop a richer taste.
  • Toast the buns: Toasted buns hold up better to the sloppy Joe sauce and add a nice crunch to the sandwich. Toast them in a toaster or on a griddle until they're golden brown.
  • Serve with your favorite toppings: Sloppy Joes are a great opportunity to get creative with toppings. Some popular options include shredded cheese, sliced pickles, diced onions, and coleslaw.
