The grocery here often has fresh turkey legs and they're very inexpensive. I make this recipe using 4 or 6, however many happen to be in the package. I then take the meat off the bone and use it in recipes that call for cooked chicken or turkey.

Tips for Cooking Slow-Cooked Turkey Legs:

  • Choose the Right Turkey Legs: Opt for fresh or thawed turkey legs that are about 2 to 2.5 pounds each. If using frozen turkey legs, thaw them completely in the refrigerator before cooking.
  • Season Generously: Rub the turkey legs with a flavorful blend of herbs, spices, and seasonings. This will infuse the meat with amazing taste as it cooks.
  • Brown the Turkey Legs: Before slow-cooking, brown the turkey legs in a skillet over medium heat. This will help develop a crispy, golden-brown exterior and lock in the juices.
  • Use a Flavorful Cooking Liquid: Add a flavorful liquid to the slow cooker, such as chicken broth, vegetable broth, or apple cider. This will help keep the turkey legs moist and prevent them from drying out.
  • Add Vegetables: Along with the turkey legs, add a variety of vegetables to the slow cooker. This will create a delicious and nutritious one-pot meal.
  • Cook on Low and Slow: Cook the turkey legs on low heat for 6-8 hours or on high heat for 3-4 hours. This will ensure that the meat is cooked through and fall-off-the-bone tender.
  • Let it Rest: Once the turkey legs are cooked, let them rest for 10-15 minutes before serving. This will allow the juices to redistribute throughout the meat, resulting in a more flavorful and succulent dish.

Conclusion:

Slow-cooked turkey legs are an incredibly versatile and delicious dish that can be enjoyed in various ways. You can serve them as the main course accompanied by mashed potatoes, roasted vegetables, or a side salad. Alternatively, you can use the cooked turkey legs in sandwiches, wraps, or tacos. No matter how you choose to serve them, slow-cooked turkey legs are sure to be a hit with your family and friends. Remember to experiment with different seasonings, cooking liquids, and vegetables to find your favorite combination. And don't be afraid to get creative with the sides and accompaniments to create a truly memorable meal. Happy cooking!
