SLOW-COOKER GRITS

Slow-Cooker Grits image

Since moving to the South, I have come to love grits! I also love my slow cooker, and I worked to find a way to make perfect grits without stirring on the stovetop. I knew this slow-cooker grits recipe was a winner when my mother-in-law overheard someone at a church potluck say that "it just wasn't right that a Midwesterner could make such good grits!" —Tacy Fleury, Clinton, South Carolina

Number Of Ingredients 6

6 cups water
2 cups quick-cooking grits
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup milk
¼ cup heavy cream
1 teaspoon butter, or to taste

Steps:

  • Place water and grits into the bottom of a slow cooker. Let grits settle to the bottom; use a strainer to fish out any grits that float to the top. Add salt. Stir or whisk well.
  • Cover and let cook on High for 2 hours, stirring well after 1 hour to avoid clumps.
  • Stir in milk, heavy cream, and butter. Mix well. Cover and continue to cook on High until grits have a fairly thick, creamy, uniform consistency, about 30 minutes more.

Tips:

  • Choose the right type of grits. Stone-ground grits have a more coarse texture and a nuttier flavor, while quick-cooking grits are more refined and cook faster.
  • Rinse the grits thoroughly before cooking. This will help to remove any dirt or debris.
  • Use a slow cooker with a removable crock. This will make it easier to clean up.
  • Add enough liquid to the slow cooker. The general rule is 2 cups of liquid for every 1 cup of grits.
  • Season the grits to taste. Salt, pepper, and butter are all classic additions, but you can also experiment with other herbs and spices.
  • Cook the grits on low for 6-8 hours, or on high for 3-4 hours. Stir the grits occasionally to prevent them from sticking to the bottom of the slow cooker.
  • Serve the grits hot. They can be served as a main course or a side dish.

Conclusion:

Slow-cooker grits are a delicious and easy breakfast or brunch option. They are also a great way to use up leftover rice or quinoa. With a few simple ingredients and a little bit of time, you can enjoy a warm and comforting bowl of grits anytime you want.
