SOUTHWESTERN GOULASH

Southwestern Goulash image

My sweetie's mom and I had the same idea for dinner last night, so I put my dinner on the back burner so I could enjoy her delicious goulash. For tonight's dinner, I needed to use the ingredients I had planned to use for my goulash the previous night. However I wanted to mix up the flavor so we wouldn't be having essentially the same dish two nights in a row. And thus...a recipe was born! Note that using a tri-color mix of peppers makes the dish just beautiful!

COUNTRY GOULASH

Country Goulash image

My grandfather came from Hungary when he was three. My grandmother made this recipe for a taste of home for him. It is Americanized, but still delicious. He added sour cream to his, while we kids we ate it plain. The consistency grandma made was like a casserole or stew rather than a soup.

Tips:

  • Use a Dutch oven or large pot to cook the goulash in. This will help to evenly distribute the heat and prevent the goulash from scorching.
  • Brown the beef cubes in batches before adding them to the pot. This will help to develop flavor and prevent the beef from becoming tough.
  • Add a variety of vegetables to the goulash, such as bell peppers, onions, carrots, and celery. This will add flavor and nutrition to the dish.
  • Use a combination of spices to flavor the goulash, such as chili powder, cumin, paprika, and oregano. Be sure to adjust the amount of spices to your taste.
  • Simmer the goulash for at least 1 hour, or until the beef is tender. This will allow the flavors to develop and meld together.
  • Serve the goulash over rice, mashed potatoes, or noodles.
