Tips:

  • Select the best oranges: Use navel oranges for a sweeter chutney and blood oranges for a tangier flavor. Choose firm, ripe oranges with no blemishes or bruises.
  • Prepare the oranges properly: Wash the oranges thoroughly, then zest and juice them. Remove the pith (the white part) from the oranges, as it can be bitter.
  • Use fresh cranberries: Fresh cranberries give the chutney its tartness and vibrant color. Avoid using frozen or dried cranberries. You could substitute other berries like blueberries or raspberries, but the result flavor profile will be different.
  • Choose the right spices: The spices in this chutney are customizable to your taste. Common spices include cinnamon, cloves, ginger, and nutmeg. You can also add a pinch of cayenne pepper for a spicy kick.
  • Cook the chutney until thickened: The chutney should be cooked until it reaches a thick, syrupy consistency. This will take about 30-45 minutes. Stir the chutney frequently to prevent it from sticking to the pan.
  • Store the chutney properly: Let the chutney cool completely before storing it in a clean, airtight container. The chutney can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks or in the freezer for up to 6 months.
