SPICY BAKED BEANS

Spicy Baked Beans image

Tangy and sweet old-fashioned baked beans with a little jalapeno. They're easy to make and great at a BBQ, hamburger night, a picnic, etc. My husband's favorite semi-homemade recipe. Says the sweetness and fire create a super depth of flavor. It's not strong enough to overwhelm the sweet home-style of baked beans.

HEALTHY/SPICY BARBECUE BAKED BEANS AND SPINACH

Healthy/Spicy Barbecue Baked Beans and Spinach image

I originally got this recipe from Eating Well magazine. It was a baked beans and sausage dish. We were making bbq chicken on the grill, so I figured why not try it without the sausage. My bf said it was way better than the original recipe, so I thought I should post it. Feel free to experiment with the beans. I have made it with white kidneys beans and it is still yummy. If you are watching your weight this is a great, easy to prepare side dish for the summer months! Note: Make sure to rinse the beans it will cut down the sodium in this dish, so don't be afraid of the nutrition facts. I don't think recipezaar takes into account rinsing the beans when it figures the nutrition information.

Tips:

  • Use a variety of beans: Don't be afraid to mix and match different types of beans, such as pinto, kidney, black, and navy beans. This will give your baked beans a more complex flavor and texture.
  • Sauté your vegetables: Sautéing the vegetables before adding them to the beans will help to caramelize them and bring out their natural sweetness. This will also help to prevent the vegetables from becoming mushy.
  • Use a flavorful broth: The broth you use will add a lot of flavor to your baked beans. Choose a broth that has a strong flavor, such as beef, chicken, or vegetable broth.
  • Add a little spice: If you like your baked beans with a little bit of a kick, add a pinch of cayenne pepper or chili powder. You can also add some chopped jalapeños or serrano peppers.
  • Bake your beans low and slow: Baking your beans low and slow will help them to develop a rich, flavorful sauce. Bake them for at least 2 hours, or until the beans are tender and the sauce has thickened.

Conclusion:

Spicy barbecue sauce baked beans are a delicious and easy-to-make side dish that is perfect for any occasion. Whether you're serving them at a backyard barbecue or a holiday dinner, these beans are sure to be a hit.
