Number Of Ingredients 5

1 cup sugar
1/4 cup apple juice
1/4 cup sparkling white wine
1 cup basil leaves
16 large strawberries

Steps:

  • Make simple syrup: Combine the sugar and 1 cup water in a saucepan over medium-low heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves.

Carefully transfer to a blender, add the basil and pulse until smooth (leave the filler cap off to let steam escape). Strain through a fine-mesh sieve into an 8-inch square metal pan. Freeze 3 to 4 hours, scraping the mixture with a fork every 20 minutes to make it slushy; freeze until ready to serve.

STRAWBERRY-JAMAICA AGUA FRESCA

Strawberry-Jamaica Agua Fresca image

Dried Hibuscus Flowers, known as 'Jamaica' give the 'tart' component to this summer quencher, and the resulting drink is absolutely, and shockingly, gorgeous. The hibiscus has a very high acidity, which you have to balance with the sweet, fragrant strawberries. This one takes a bit more time to make, but it's worth it. Purchase the 'jamaica' flowers at your local Mexican specialty store - they last quite a long time if stored properly.

STRAWBERRY AGUA FRESCA

Strawberry Agua Fresca image

From Cooking Light magazine. Spanish for "fresh water", agua fresca is a refreshing, fruit-infused drink that is served throughout Mexico. Depending on the ripeness of the berries, adjust the amount of sugar for desired sweetness. Frozen strawberries would be fine in this. I like this with 2-3 times the water or seltzer water for a thinner drink. I also increase the sugar.
