MILD-MANNERED CHILI

Mild-Mannered Chili image

I like chili, but I'm not a fan of heat for heat's sake. I wanted something that would warm me up but not be overwhelmingly hot, and this was the result. My husband says that this would also make a good sloppy joe (with beans) mix.

Time 15m

Number Of Ingredients 6

1 lb. of lean ground beef
1 large can of tomato sauce
1 small can of kidney beans
2 tbsp of chili powder
1 package of McCormick's Original Chili Seasoning
1/2 cup of chopped onion

Steps:

  • In large stock pot, brown the ground beef. When it is close to being finished, add the onions and cook until the beef is browned and the onions are translucent. If you use lean ground beef, there is no need to drain. (If you use a fattier ground beef, it's a good idea to drain the grease) Add in the chili seasoning and chili powder and stir well. Next add the remaining ingredients. Let simmer for 10 minutes. Serve while hot! You can add cheese, crackers, chopped onion, or even some sour cream to give it an extra kick!

  • Stir stewed tomatoes, tomato sauce, light red kidney beans, dark red kidney beans, mild salsa, chili seasoning mix, and garlic powder into the beef mixture; bring to a boil, reduce heat to medium-low, and cook at a simmer until the flavors meld, 90 minutes to 2 hours.

Tips:

  • Choose the Right Chili Base: Select a combination of three to four dried chilies, toasted and ground, or use a pre-made chili powder blend for a consistent flavor.
  • Brown the Meat Thoroughly: Browning adds depth of flavor and caramelizes the natural sugars in the meat. Ensure the meat is cooked evenly before adding other ingredients. For a leaner chili, drain off any excess fat.
  • Use Fresh Vegetables: Fresh vegetables, such as onions, bell peppers, and corn, add vibrant color, texture, and sweetness to the chili. Chop them evenly to ensure even cooking.
  • Add Aromatics: Aromatics, such as garlic, ginger, and cumin, provide a flavorful base for the chili. Sauté them in a little oil until fragrant before adding the other ingredients.
  • Use a Variety of Beans: Incorporate a mix of beans, such as kidney beans, black beans, and pinto beans, to add texture and protein to the chili. Rinse and sort the beans before using to remove any debris.
  • Use Broth Instead of Water: Replace water with vegetable or beef broth to enhance the flavor of the chili. Broth adds a rich, savory depth that elevates the overall taste.
  • Simmer for Flavor Development: Allow the chili to simmer for at least 30 minutes, preferably longer, to allow the flavors to meld and deepen. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.
  • Season to Taste: Adjust the seasonings, including salt, pepper, and chili powder, to your preference. Taste the chili throughout the cooking process and make adjustments as needed.

Conclusion:

Creating a delicious and flavorful mild chili involves careful selection of ingredients, proper cooking techniques, and attention to detail. By using a combination of dried chilies, fresh vegetables, aromatic spices, and a variety of beans, you can achieve a rich, complex flavor that satisfies both mild chili enthusiasts and those who prefer a bit more heat. Remember to brown the meat thoroughly, use fresh ingredients, simmer the chili for optimal flavor development, and adjust the seasonings to your liking. With these tips and the provided recipe, you'll be able to prepare a mild chili that's bursting with flavor and enjoyed by all.
