Provided by Pantry Chef Starkey

Categories     Tilapia

Time 1h

Yield 4 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 8

2 filleted tilapia fillets, about 4 fillets
1 cup apple cider vinegar, more if needed
2 tablespoons horseradish
2 tablespoons low-fat mayonnaise
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 teaspoon basil leaves
1 tablespoon paprika
1 medium lemon, wedged

Steps:

  • Wash tilapia and place in flat non-metal pan. Cover with apple cider vinegar. Let stand in refrigerator 1/2 hour.
  • Mix together low fat mayo and horseradish. Place aside.
  • Bring enough water to make 1/2 inch depth in large pan to a boil. Place garlic in water, turn off heat. Remove tilapia from vinegar, carefully place into heated water and turn heat to very low.
  • Sprinkle basil leaves and paprika over tilapia fillets and very lightly simmer, covered, for 10-15 minutes. Turn off heat.
  • Serve with a spoonful of horseradish/mayonnaise mixture on each fillet and a lemon wedge.

Tips:

  • Choose the Right Tilapia Fillets: Opt for fresh or frozen tilapia fillets that are firm and have a mild, slightly sweet flavor. Avoid fillets that are discolored or have an off smell.
  • Properly Thaw Frozen Fillets: If using frozen tilapia fillets, thaw them properly in the refrigerator overnight or under cold running water for about 30 minutes. Never thaw tilapia fillets at room temperature.
  • Seasoning and Marinating: Before cooking, season the tilapia fillets with salt, pepper, and any desired herbs or spices. You can also marinate the fillets in a flavorful mixture of olive oil, lemon juice, herbs, and spices for added flavor.
  • Choose the Right Cooking Method: Tilapia fillets can be cooked using various methods, including pan-frying, baking, grilling, or steaming. Adjust the cooking time and temperature depending on the cooking method and the thickness of the fillets.
  • Monitor Cooking Time: Tilapia fillets cook quickly, so it's essential to monitor the cooking time closely to prevent overcooking. Overcooked tilapia becomes dry and tough.
  • Serve with Fresh Sides: Pair cooked tilapia fillets with fresh and flavorful sides like roasted vegetables, grilled lemon wedges, or a crisp salad to create a balanced and satisfying meal.

Conclusion:

Tilapia fillets are a versatile and delicious fish that can be prepared in various ways. By following these tips and experimenting with different recipes, you can create mouthwatering tilapia dishes that will impress your family and friends. Whether you prefer pan-fried, baked, grilled, or steamed tilapia, the key is to cook it properly to maintain its delicate flavor and texture. Enjoy exploring the culinary possibilities of tilapia and delight in its mild, slightly sweet taste that complements a wide range of flavors.
