Categories     dessert

Time 1h20m

Yield 6 to 8 servings

Number Of Ingredients 12

3 large Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
1 orange, zested
1 cup fresh cranberries
1/3 cup raisins
1/4 cup walnuts, chopped
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
Pie crust dough, enough for top and bottom (from your own favorite recipe)
1/4 cup half-and-half
Sugar, for sprinkling

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.
  • In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, orange zest, cranberries, raisins, walnuts, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg and mix well. Roll out the bottom dough and place it into a 9-inch pan, leaving 1-inch of pie dough hanging over. Pour the pie filling into the crust. Roll out the top dough and cut it with a scalloped pastry wheel into 15 strips. Gently twist the strips 2 or 3 times, beginning with the longest ones, and place them on top of the pie, working outward and in various angles. Gently fold the bottom crust up over the edge of the pie and flute the edges with your fingertips. With a pastry brush, gently brush the half-and-half over the entire top crust and edges and then sprinkle generously with sugar.
  • Bake until apples are cooked, about 45 to 50 minutes. (You can check the apples with a fork to make sure they are tender). Remove to a rack to cool. Serve warm or at room temperature.

MOM'S BEST APPLE PIE

Just the way Mom always made it. She passed it on to me, and now I'm passing it on to you. I usually cheat and use ready made crusts, I never use the salt, and I add more pie seasoning and vanilla just as personal preference.

MOMS APPLE PIE (MAKES 2)

Moms Apple Pie (Makes 2) image

The Pastors wife of the church I attended as a kid had the most wonderful apple pies. She gave her recipe to my Mom. Mom never made something without trying to make it better then last time. I've ate these pies every time Mom made them and I've made them for 40 years for my family. They always taste like more. This is the final result she used before she passed. They are easy to make and are the same time after time. Oh, make the two, I promise they won't go to waste. Give one to a neighbor. We still do that.

Number Of Ingredients 12

16 - mcintosh apples
1 pkg - cook and serve tapioca pudding (3 oz.)
1 tablespoon(s) cornstarch (heaping)
1 tablespoon(s) flour (heaping)
1 tablespoon(s) cinnamon (level)
1 teaspoon(s) cinnamon (level)
3/8 cup(s) sugar
4 teaspoon(s) butter
1 - egg white
2 tablespoon(s) sugar
4 - thawed deep dish pie crusts
2 tablespoon(s) water

Steps:

  • Peel, core and slice apples. Pieces should be nickel to quarter size, no thicker then 1/4 inch.
  • In a bowl mix, dry pudding mix, cornstarch, flour, cinnamon and 3/8 cup sugar.
  • Pour dry mix over apples and mix until evenly distributed.
  • Divide apples and fill shells. Mound up so apples are 2-3 inches above rim of pan. (Depending on the apple size you may have some left over)
  • Put 2 teaspoons butter on top of apples in three or four pieces.
  • Loosen the remaining crusts and invert pans on top of the pies. Work slowly so you don't tear the crust. Flute edges with fingers. (If you want to decorate as shown, use the crust you cut off after you flute edges. Since I usually make these in the fall I put acorns, pumpkins, grape vines and leaves on them.)(See Picture.)
  • Cut 3-4 slits in crust. (1 inch each)
  • Mix the egg white and the two tablespoons of water. Brush entire crust with egg white mixture.
  • Sprinkle each crust with 1 Tablespoon of sugar.
  • Bake in 375 degree oven for 40 to 45 minutes. Pie will be golden. Enjoy.

MOM'S FLAT APPLE PIE

Mom's Flat Apple Pie image

We love the idea of eating apple pie with your hands! Once baked, this tastes like the fried apple pies you can get at that famous fast food restaurant where billions have been served. Rolling the dough on a cookie sheet is genius. The crust becomes flaky and delicious. The warm apple filling is perfectly sweet with notes of cinnamon. We loved the sweet icing drizzle on top. Eat this warm or at room temp. Either way is absolutely delicious.

Categories     Pies

Number Of Ingredients 15

3 3/4 cup(s) all-purpose flour
3/4 teaspoon(s) salt
1 1/2 cup(s) shortening
1 - egg yolk, plus enough milk to make 1 cup of liquid
2-3 - handfuls of Corn Flakes
10 - Granny Smith apples, sliced and cored
4-8 tablespoon(s) butter, cubed
1 cup(s) sugar
1 teaspoon(s) cinnamon
1 - egg
1 teaspoon(s) sugar
THIN FROSTING
2/3 cup(s) powered sugar
2-3 dash(es) vanilla extract
milk, enough for a thin frosting

Steps:

  • Mix ingredients for crust (which are the first 4 ingredients on the list).
  • Roll out half of the dough to fit a cookie sheet.
  • Sprinkle with Corn Flakes.
  • Place sliced apples on top of Corn Flakes.
  • Mix sugar and cinnamon and sprinkle on top of apples. Dot with butter.
  • Add top crust to cover.
  • Beat egg white and sugar and brush on top of pie. Cut a few slits in the top of the pie crust.
  • Bake at 425 degrees F for 25-30 mintues.
  • Mix powered sugar, vanilla and enough milk to make a thin frosting. Drizzle over hot pie.

Tips:

  • Choose the right apples: A good apple pie starts with good apples. Look for firm, tart apples that will hold their shape when baked, such as Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Braeburn.
  • Peel and slice the apples thinly: This will help them cook evenly and prevent them from becoming mushy.
  • Use a combination of spices: A classic apple pie spice blend includes cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger. You can also add a pinch of cloves or allspice for extra flavor.
  • Don't overfill the pie crust: Leave about 1 inch of space around the edges of the crust so that the filling has room to bubble and expand.
  • Brush the crust with milk or egg wash before baking: This will help it to brown and become crispy.
  • Bake the pie until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbling: This usually takes about 45-60 minutes.
  • Let the pie cool before serving: This will give the filling time to set and firm up.

Conclusion:

Apple pie is a classic American dessert that is perfect for any occasion. With its flaky crust, sweet and tart filling, and warm spices, it's a dish that everyone will love. So next time you're looking for a delicious and comforting dessert, give this recipe a try. You won't be disappointed!
