THE ORIGINAL KIELBASA AND SAUERKRAUT

The Original Kielbasa and Sauerkraut image

This is a family recipe passed down from my grandfather and my father who still make every New Year's Day. It's the best. Trust me, you'll love this recipe. It's original and kinda simple. It's 'old school.' Serve with Jewish rye bread, butter, and horseradish. A good side is mashed potatoes with cheese, milk, and butter to create a rich, creamy, tasty mashed potatoes to go with the dish.

Tips:

  • For the best flavor, use good-quality kielbasa and sauerkraut. Look for kielbasa that is made with a blend of pork and beef, and sauerkraut that is fermented for at least six months.
  • If you don't have time to cook the kielbasa and sauerkraut ahead of time, you can use pre-cooked kielbasa and sauerkraut from the deli section of your grocery store.
  • Add some chopped onion and garlic to the pan when you're cooking the kielbasa. This will help to add flavor to the dish.
  • Use a hearty pasta, such as penne or ziti, for this dish. The pasta will hold up well to the sauce.
  • Season the dish to taste with salt and pepper. You may also want to add a pinch of red pepper flakes for a little bit of heat.
  • Serve the ziti with a green salad or a side of roasted vegetables.
