My grandma used to make this recipe for the Holidays or on special occasions. We call it Grandma's Coffee cake. Even though the recipe is simple my Mom never could quite get it right. My Dad used to joke that the missing ingredient was Elsie's ashes. As she smoked cigarettes while she was cooking and the ashes were always...

Number Of Ingredients 10

1 1/2 c flour
1/2 cup c cold margarine
1 c light brown sugar
1/2 tsp salt
1 large egg
1/2 c sour cream
1 tsp nutmeg
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp vanilla extract

Steps:

  • 1. Sift before measuring. Work flour and sugar by using 2 knives to cut margarine. Save 1 cup of this mixture of sugar, margarine and flour for the top after baking.
  • 2. Add remainder of ingredients. Pour into well greased pan 9x9 square pan, at 350 for 1 hour.
