Maddog's Venison Sloppy Joes image

I'm always looking for new ways to cook venison. This non-Manwich® sloppy joe recipe will be sure to turn heads on the traditional comfort food.

3 tablespoons vegetable oil, divided
1 yellow onion, diced
1 red bell pepper, diced
1 jalapeno pepper, diced
1 pound ground venison
1 pinch ground black pepper, or to taste
1 pinch ground cayenne pepper, or to taste
1 pinch grill seasoning (such as Montreal Steak Seasoning®), or to taste
1 pinch garlic salt, or to taste
1 dash Worcestershire sauce
1 vine-ripened tomato, diced
2 tablespoons barbeque sauce, or more to taste
2 tablespoons ketchup (such as Heinz®), or more to taste
2 teaspoons tomato paste, or more to taste
2 teaspoons hot sauce, or more to taste
4 hamburger buns, split
1 (8 ounce) package shredded sharp Cheddar cheese

Steps:

  • Heat 1 1/2 tablespoon oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add onion, red bell pepper, and jalapeno; cook and stir until softened, 5 to 8 minutes.
  • Heat remaining 1 1/2 tablespoon oil in another skillet over medium heat. Add venison; cook and stir until lightly browned, 4 to 5 minutes. Stir in black pepper, cayenne pepper, grill seasoning, garlic salt, and Worcestershire sauce; cook until venison is browned, 4 to 5 minutes.
  • Combine tomato, barbeque sauce, ketchup, tomato paste, and hot sauce in a food processor; pulse until sauce is combined.
  • Combine onion mixture, venison mixture, and sauce in a saucepan. Simmer until flavors combine, 10 to 15 minutes. Divide among buns; top with Cheddar cheese.
