Nino's Lasagna image

I found this recipe in the newspaper a few years ago. It is my families favourite lasagna and I have been asked many times for the recipe. Takes awhile to make but worth it.

9 lasagna noodles
1 cup parmesan cheese
1 cup grated mozzarella cheese
meat, sauce
1 medium onion, chopped
3 garlic cloves, chopped
1 celery, finely chopped
1 tablespoon finely chopped parsley (or dried)
1/2 medium carrot, grated
1 (5 1/2 ounce) can tomato paste
1 (28 ounce) can crushed tomatoes
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1 teaspoon basil
1/2 bay leaf
1 teaspoon sugar
1 1/2 lbs lean ground beef
cream, sauce
1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup flour
3 3/4 cups milk
1 pinch each salt, pepper, sugar, nutmeg, cinnamon

Steps:

  • Cook lasagna noodles according to package directions.
  • To make meat sauce: Sauté in small amount of oil, onion, garlic, celery, parsley and carrot. Add tomato paste, tomatoes and spices and sugar. Sauté ground beef in skillet and add to sauce. Simmer 2 hours.
  • To make cream sauce: Melt butter, add flour stirring to mix. Add milk stirring until smooth and thickened. Add remaining ingredients.
  • Lightly oil a 9 x 13 inch pan, layer noodles, meat sauce, cream sauce, Parmesan and mozzarella cheese. Repeat layers twice.
  • Bake in 350 degree oven for 1 hour. Let stand 15 minutes before cutting.
