Perfect Agave Margarita image

Much research has caused me to determine that most Americans have been led down the 'preverbal' path in the ingredients of a great margarita. We have grown to love lime aid with some added tequila as what we know as a margarita. Hopefully this recipe will help to change that. But, as I always say--to each his/her own. Some will...

Time 5m

Number Of Ingredients 6

2 oz silver or reposado 100% agave tequila
1 oz freshly squeezed lime juice (not bottled)
1/2 oz agave nectar (adjust up/down for sweetness)
1 oz fresh cool water
1 slice lime for garnish (optional)
1 tsp course salt for rim (optional)

Steps:

  • 1. In a mixing glass or mason jar add all ingredients except the salt and lime garnish.
  • 2. Mix well with a spoon or cover the jar and shake very gently.
  • 3. To salt the rim of your glass (optional) drag a cut lime around the rim and then gently dip the rim in a saucer filled with fluer de sel so that the salt sticks to the rim. Fill the glass to the top with ice. Add cocktail mixture to a cocktail shaker filled with ice and shake until well chilled. About 30 seconds.
  • 4. Strain contents of shaker over the ice in the glass and garnish with slice of lime.
  • 5. Enjoy -- repeat.

This margarita is a bit too strong for my taste. I think I'll use less tequila next time.

I'm allergic to agave. Is there anything else I can use in this recipe?

I followed the recipe exactly, but my margarita didn't turn out as good as I hoped. I'm not sure what I did wrong.

I was a bit skeptical about using agave syrup in a margarita, but I was pleasantly surprised. It added a really nice flavor that I wouldn't have gotten from regular sugar.
