These originated in Maine in 1902 at Amato's. They're now franchised throughout New England. I worked for Amato's for about 5 years and made plenty of them. Many people, fresh from the jetport, make it their first stop to get one when returning to Maine. You must use the exact ingredients or it won't come out right, although you...

1 long soft sub roll
3 slice white american cheese
2 slice boiled ham
1 handful, chopped yellow onion
6 slice sour pickle spears
1 tomato, sliced
4 slice green pepper
2 greek olives, sliced
1 Tbsp vegetable oil
1 tsp olive oil

Steps:

  • 1. Slice the roll, and add the ingredients in the order listed. Mix the oils together and sprinkle over the sandwich. Add salt and pepper to taste. Serve at room temperature.
