Time 2h20m

Yield 1 Loaf

Number Of Ingredients 7

2 1/4 teaspoons yeast
3/4 cup luke warm water (90)
1/2 cup scalded milk, cooled
1 tablespoon sugar
1 1/4 teaspoons salt
1 tablespoon shortening
3 -4 cups sifted flour

Steps:

  • Add yeast to lukewarm water and dissolve.
  • Add remaining ingredients.
  • Turn out on lightly floured board and knead until smooth and elastic.
  • Round up and place in a greased bowl.
  • Grease surface of dough.
  • Cover and let rise until double in bulk.
  • Punch down dough and turn out on floured board.
  • Round up dough and let rest 10 minutes.
  • Mold dough into a loaf.
  • Let rise in a greased pan until double in bulk.
  • Bake in 425°F oven about 40 minutes.
  • Turn out of pan and brush top with melted butter.
  • Cool on a rack.

Tips:

  • For best results, use fresh, high-quality ingredients.
  • Make sure your yeast is active before using it. To test, dissolve 1 teaspoon of sugar in 1/4 cup of warm water (110-115°F). Stir in 1 teaspoon of yeast and let stand for 5-10 minutes. If the yeast is active, it will foam and bubble.
  • Knead the dough well. This will develop the gluten in the flour and give the bread a chewy texture.
  • Let the dough rise in a warm place until it has doubled in size. This will take about 1-2 hours.
  • Bake the bread in a preheated oven. This will help the bread to rise evenly.
  • Let the bread cool completely before slicing and serving.
