Pear Apple Chutney image

Categories     Condiment/Spread     Fruit     Ginger     Christmas     Quick & Easy     Wheat/Gluten-Free     Raisin     Apple     Pear     Winter     Gourmet

Yield Makes about 4 cups

Number Of Ingredients 8

2 firm-ripe red Bartlett pears
2 Granny Smith apples
1 cup golden raisins
1/2 cup rice vinegar (not seasoned)
1/4 cup sugar
1 tablespoon finely chopped peeled fresh gingerroot
1 teaspoon mustard seeds
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

Steps:

  • Halve and core pears and apples. Cut 2 pear halves and 2 apple halves into 1/4-inch-thick slices and chop remaining pears and apples.
  • In a saucepan combine sliced and chopped pears and apples with remaining ingredients and bring to a simmer, stirring gently. Simmer chutney, covered, stirring occasionally, until fruit is just tender, 10 to 15 minutes, and cool. Chutney may be made 1 day ahead and chilled, covered. Serve chutney chilled or at room temperature.

Tips:

  • For the best results, use ripe, flavorful apples and pears. You can peel the fruit if desired, but it is not necessary.
  • Feel free to adjust the amount of sugar in the recipe to taste. If you like a sweeter mustard, add more sugar. If you prefer a more savory mustard, reduce the amount of sugar or omit it altogether.
  • You can use a food processor or a blender to puree the apples and pears. If you use a food processor, be careful not to over-process the fruit, as you want it to retain some texture.
  • Be sure to sterilize your jars and lids before filling them with mustard. This will help to prevent spoilage.
  • Store the finished mustard in a cool, dark place. It will keep for several months.

Conclusion:

Apple and pear mustard is a delicious and versatile condiment that can be used in a variety of dishes. It is perfect for sandwiches, wraps, and salads. It can also be used as a dipping sauce for chicken, fish, or vegetables. With its sweet and tangy flavor, apple and pear mustard is sure to please everyone at your table.
