WHEN Mom made pies to feed the crew during wheat harvest, she always had plenty of dough left over, so she treated us kids to apple dumplings. I've carried on this tradition in my own family. Now my husband and I enjoy this special dessert even when I'm not baking pies.

APPLE DUMPLINGS WITH RICH CINNAMON SAUCE

Apple Dumplings With Rich Cinnamon Sauce image

From USA Weekend. I haven't tried this one yet, but it sounds like a wonderful dessert, especially for fall. USA Weekend recommends NOT using Golden Delicious apples for this recipe. This is definitely a dessert for special occasions; it's somewhat involved. :)

Tips:

  • Use a sharp knife to peel and core the apples. This will help to prevent the apples from breaking apart when you wrap them in the dough.
  • Be careful not to overfill the dumplings. If you do, they will be difficult to seal and the filling may leak out.
  • Place the dumplings in a single layer in the baking dish. This will help them to cook evenly.
  • Bake the dumplings until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbling. This usually takes about 30-35 minutes.
  • Serve the dumplings warm with the cinnamon sauce.
