GREEN PAPAYA SALAD

Green Papaya Salad image

In Isan (and the rest of Thailand), green papaya salad is called som tum, with "som" meaning "sour" and "tum" referring to the pounding sound of the large pestle used to crush ingredients. It is eaten by itself as a snack, or with marinated grilled beef and chicken.

1/2 teaspoon raw sugar or white sugar
1 tablespoon dried shrimp (optional)
2 tablespoons fresh lime juice

PAPAYA-MINT SAUCE

Papaya-Mint Sauce image

Categories     Sauce     Citrus     Fruit     Low Sodium     Papaya     Mint     Summer     Bon Appétit

Yield Makes 1 cup

Number Of Ingredients 4

1 large papaya, peeled, seeded, coarsely chopped (about 1 1/2 cups)
5 tablespoons sugar
3 tablespoons fresh lime juice
1 1/2 tablespoons coarsely chopped fresh mint

Steps:

  • Puree all ingredients in processor until smooth. Transfer to bowl. Cover and refrigerate until ready to use. (Can be prepared 1 day ahead. Keep refrigerated.)

Tips:

  • For the best flavor, use ripe fruits. If your fruits are not ripe, you can speed up the process by placing them in a paper bag with an apple or banana. The ethylene gas released by these fruits will help the other fruits ripen more quickly.
  • If you are using canned fruit, be sure to drain and rinse it before using. This will help to remove the excess sugar and syrup.
  • To make the mint sauce, use fresh mint leaves. This will give the sauce the best flavor. If you don't have fresh mint leaves, you can use dried mint leaves, but the flavor will not be as good.
  • You can adjust the amount of sugar in the mint sauce to taste. If you like a sweeter sauce, add more sugar. If you prefer a less sweet sauce, reduce the amount of sugar.
  • Serve the fruit salad with the mint sauce immediately. The sauce will start to lose its flavor after a few hours.

Conclusion:

This Asian fruit salad with the refreshing and flavorful mint sauce is the perfect dish for any occasion. Whether you are hosting a party or just looking for a healthy and delicious snack, this salad is sure to please.
