This is about as simple as it gets: classically prepared mashed potatoes - just potatoes, milk, butter and salt - get a generous handful of pretty chives stirred in. Be sure to add plenty of salt, and taste as you go; good mashed potatoes rely on it.

Tips:

  • Choose the right potatoes: Red potatoes are a good choice for mashed potatoes because they have a thin skin and a creamy texture. Yukon Gold potatoes are also a good option.
  • Boil the potatoes until they are tender: You can check if the potatoes are done by piercing them with a fork. If the fork goes through easily, the potatoes are done.
  • Drain the potatoes thoroughly: This will prevent the mashed potatoes from being watery.
  • Mash the potatoes until they are smooth: You can use a potato masher, a ricer, or a food processor to mash the potatoes.
  • Add milk and butter: Milk and butter will help to make the mashed potatoes creamy and flavorful. You can also add other ingredients, such as sour cream, cream cheese, or herbs.
  • Season the mashed potatoes to taste: Salt and pepper are essential seasonings for mashed potatoes. You can also add other spices, such as garlic powder, onion powder, or paprika.

Conclusion:

Mashed potatoes are a delicious and versatile side dish that can be served with a variety of main dishes. They are also a great way to use up leftover potatoes. With just a few simple ingredients, you can make a delicious and creamy mashed potato dish that your family and friends will love.
