GRILLED PORK CHOPS WITH ITALIAN RELISH

Grilled Pork Chops with Italian Relish image

Categories     Garlic     Onion     Tomato     Marinate     Low Carb     Backyard BBQ     Dinner     Basil     Pork Chop     Summer     Grill     Grill/Barbecue     Oregano     Bon Appétit     Sugar Conscious     Paleo     Dairy Free     Wheat/Gluten-Free     Peanut Free     Tree Nut Free     Soy Free     No Sugar Added

Yield Makes 4 servings

Number Of Ingredients 8

3/4 pound plum tomatoes, seeded, chopped
3/4 cup chopped red onion
1/4 cup red wine vinegar
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 tablespoon chopped garlic
1 tablespoon chopped fresh basil or 1 teaspoon dried
1 tablespoon chopped fresh oregano or 1 teaspoon dried
4 3/4-to-1 inch thick center-cut pork chops

Steps:

  • Combine first 7 ingredients in small bowl. Season with salt and pepper. Let stand at least 15 minutes or up to 1 hour.
  • Prepare barbeque (medium heat). Arrange pork chops in 8x8x2-inch glass baking dish. Drain liquid from relish; spoon liquid over pork. Let pork marinate at least 15 minutes, turning occasionally. Grill pork until cooked through, about 6 minutes per side.
  • Transfer pork to plates. Spoon relish over and serve.

Tips:

  • Choose the right onions: Red onions are the most popular choice for onion relish because of their sweet and slightly spicy flavor, but you can also use yellow or white onions. If you want a milder relish, use sweet onions like Vidalia or Walla Walla.
  • Slice the onions thinly: This will help them cook evenly and absorb the pickling liquid better.
  • Use a sharp knife: This will make it easier to slice the onions thinly and evenly.
  • Cook the onions slowly: This will help them caramelize and develop a deep, rich flavor.
  • Add sugar or honey: This will help to balance out the acidity of the vinegar and add a touch of sweetness.
  • Use a variety of spices: You can use any spices you like, but some common choices include mustard seeds, celery seeds, and black pepper.
  • Let the relish rest: This will allow the flavors to meld and develop.

Conclusion:

Onion relish is a versatile condiment that can be used on a variety of foods, including hamburgers, hot dogs, sandwiches, and salads. It is also a great way to use up leftover onions. With a few simple ingredients and a little bit of time, you can make a delicious and flavorful onion relish that will add a pop of flavor to your next meal.
