EASTERN NC PULLED PORK BBQ IN A CROCK POT

Eastern NC Pulled Pork BBQ in a Crock Pot image

It's the best way to make BBQ short of having a pig pickin'! Eastern NC BBQ done the right way. No tomato in sight! The taste reminds me of Smithfield's, which is the best BBQ in my opinion. This BBQ goes great in a sandwich topped with a scoop of sweet coleslaw, side of hushpuppies, and sweet tea. Mmmmmm. Enjoy!

Time 12h20m

Yield 18-24 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 12

1 cup white vinegar
1 cup cider vinegar
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1 tablespoon cayenne pepper
1 tablespoon hot pepper sauce (e.g. Tabasco(TM)
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ground black pepper
1 large vidalia onion (or other type of sweet onion)
8 -12 lbs pork shoulder
1 cup white vinegar
1 cup apple cider vinegar
dry rub seasonings (any good one) (optional)

Steps:

  • Quarter and slice the onion into little arches. Place about half an onion's worth in the crock pot as to line the bottom.
  • Place the whole pork shoulder into the crock-pot. Take just a small amount of sauce to dampen the shoulder.
  • Cover with a generous coating of spice rub, if desired.
  • Top with remaining onion slices. Take 75% of the sauce and pour it around the pork shoulder. Then pour the white and cider vinegars around the pork.
  • Cover and cook on low for 8-12 hours.
  • When cooking is complete, remove cover and then carefully pull the bone out of the pork shoulder (BE CAREFUL! IT WILL BE HOT!).
  • Carefully remove the meat and half of the onions from the crock-pot and put into a large bowl, leaving behind as much of the cooked vinegar solution behind as possible. A slotted spoon may be needed.
  • Then with two forks (or your hands once the meat has cooled a little, if you are so inclined), "pull" (shred) the meat.
  • Pour in most of the remaining, "uncooked" sauce, saving a little to add to BBQ sandwiches as desired. (Personally, I prefer using Texas Pete on my sandwiches.).
  • Serve as sandwich or BBQ plate.
  • Enjoy!

EASY SLOW COOKER BBQ

Easy Slow Cooker BBQ image

Southern pulled pork BBQ that is so easy to make! I have shared this BBQ with family, friends, and co-workers, and they have told me that this is amongst the best BBQ they have ever eaten. I use a North Carolina style vinegar-based sauce when I make this, but this is the fun part of this recipe, because you can use any sauce you like and it turns out good. Your pulled pork makes good BBQ plates, or it is good on sandwiches also.

CROCK POT BBQ PORK

Crock Pot BBQ Pork image

I searched recipezaar for BBQ sauce recipes and made this one out of three or four recipes. It is rather loose and based on what was in my cupboard at the time. Please experiment with it! It would be amazing on baked or grilled chicken too!

Provided by Alyss05

Categories     Pork

Time 5h20m

Yield 4-6 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 15

2 1/2-3 lbs picnic pork roast, trimmed to fit the crock pot
1 onion, sliced
3 garlic cloves, halved
3/4 cup ketchup
1/4 cup lemon juice
3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
2 tablespoons maple syrup
1 tablespoon molasses
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon chipotle hot sauce
2 garlic cloves, pressed
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ground black pepper
3 tablespoons tomato paste

Steps:

  • Lay sliced onions and halved garlic cloves in the bottom of the crock pot.
  • Lay hunk o' pig on top of the onions.
  • Combine sauce ingredients (from ketchup to black pepper). Please add more or use less of whatever you want. This was a thrown together thing, but it worked pretty good :) If you are ever in Portland OR make sure you pick up a bottle of Secret Aardvark sauce, otherwise use whatever hot sauce you like (chipotle anything would be amazing in here!).
  • Pour the sauce over the pig and onions, turn your crock pot on and go to work. It will probably take 5-8 hours to cook this baby, depending on your crock.
  • When done pull the hunk o' pig out of the crock pot and into a large bowl or pot. Using two forks shred the meat and separate it from the gristle and bone.
  • Strain the contents of the crock pot into a sauce pan on the stove. Discard the onions. If you have the time and inclination reduce the sauce and degrease it anyway you can (I used ice cubes and paper towels and it was still pretty greasy -- refrigerating it and peeling the fat off would be the best, but isn't the point of a crock pot meal that you have dinner ready when you get home?). Use additional tomato paste or other ingredients to thicken and adjust the flavor of the sauce.
  • Mix a bit of the sauce into the pork to make it saucy to your liking. Serve with bread and more hot sauce. Wallow in porky heaven.
  • MMMMmmmm.

Tips:

  • Use a good quality pork shoulder or pork butt for the best results.
  • Sear the pork shoulder on all sides before slow cooking to add flavor.
  • Use a flavorful rub on the pork shoulder before cooking to enhance the taste.
  • Add plenty of liquid to the slow cooker to prevent the pork from drying out.
  • Cook the pork shoulder on low heat for at least 8 hours, or until it is fall-apart tender.
  • Shred the pork shoulder with two forks before serving.
  • Serve the pork shoulder with your favorite sides, such as coleslaw, baked beans, or potato salad.

Conclusion:

Bill's Pork Barbecue in a Crock Pot is an easy and delicious recipe that can be made with just a few simple ingredients. The pork shoulder is cooked slowly in a crock pot until it is fall-apart tender, and then it is shredded and served with your favorite sides. This recipe is perfect for a casual meal with friends or family, and it is sure to be a hit with everyone who tries it.
