A close friend passed on this recipe. It's been in her family for years, and now it's a favorite in ours, too (my husband and I have an 11-year-old son). In fact, we've turned having Black-Eyed Pea Chowder into a New Year's tradition at our house For a large crowds, I've sometimes doubled the recipe. Everyone that I've made it for has enjoyed it. I even have a friend who doesn't like black-eyed peas but loves the chowder.

This is great for a New Years Eve gathering or any cold winter night. It's excellent served with cornbread. Works best when prepared the night before, and then reheated the next day.

Tips:

  • Choose dried black-eyed peas that are whole and unblemished. Avoid any peas that are split or have holes in them.
  • Soak the black-eyed peas overnight in cold water. This will help them to cook more quickly and evenly.
  • Rinse the black-eyed peas thoroughly before cooking them. This will remove any dirt or debris.
  • Use a large pot to cook the black-eyed peas. This will give them plenty of room to expand.
  • Add aromatics, such as onion, garlic, and celery, to the pot along with the black-eyed peas. This will add flavor to the chowder.
  • Season the chowder with salt, pepper, and other spices to taste. You can also add a bay leaf for extra flavor.
  • Simmer the chowder for at least 1 hour, or until the black-eyed peas are tender. The longer you simmer the chowder, the more flavorful it will be.
  • Serve the chowder hot, garnished with fresh parsley or chives.
