I don't eat it often but every once in a while I want some. Made the spread today. I usually like it on crackers. But sometimes a half sandwich with some milk-sweetened onion slices...

BRAUNSCHWEIGER SALAD SPREAD

Braunschweiger Salad Spread image

I like to butter one slice of bread, put spread on other and make a sandwich of this spread. A slice of onion on the sandwich just makes it that much better.

Provided by Darlene Summers

Categories     Spreads

Time 10m

Yield 6 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 6

3 tablespoons sweet pickle relish
1/2 lb braunschweiger sausage (cubed)
1/4 medium sweet onion
1 celery rib (diced small)
1/8 teaspoon hot sauce
1 teaspoon parsley flakes

Steps:

  • Mix all ingredients in food processor till smooth.
  • Use on bread to make sandwich or use on crackers like a dip.

Tips:

  • Use high-quality liver. Fresh, high-quality liver is essential for making the best braunschweiger spread. Look for liver that is a deep red color and has no signs of bruising or discoloration.
  • Soak the liver in milk. Soaking the liver in milk helps to remove any impurities and mellows the flavor. Be sure to soak the liver for at least 30 minutes, or up to overnight.
  • Cook the liver slowly. Overcooking the liver will make it tough and dry. Cook the liver over low heat until it is just cooked through, about 10-15 minutes.
  • Grind the liver finely. The finer the liver is ground, the smoother the braunschweiger spread will be. Use a food processor or meat grinder to grind the liver until it is very fine.
  • Season the braunschweiger spread to taste. Braunschweiger spread can be seasoned with a variety of spices and herbs. Some common seasonings include salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and paprika.
  • Chill the braunschweiger spread before serving. Chilling the braunschweiger spread helps it to firm up and makes it easier to spread.

Conclusion:

Braunschweiger spread is a delicious and versatile spread that can be enjoyed in a variety of ways. It can be used as a sandwich spread, a dip for vegetables or crackers, or an ingredient in other dishes. With its rich, savory flavor, braunschweiger spread is a surefire hit at any party or gathering.
