THE REAL MOJITO

The Real Mojito image

This is an authentic recipe for mojito. I sized the recipe for one serving, but you can adjust it accordingly and make a pitcher full. It's a very refreshing drink for hot summer days. Be careful when drinking it, however. If you make a pitcher you might be tempted to drink the whole thing yourself, and you just might find yourself talking Spanish in no time! Tonic water can be substituted instead of the soda water but the taste is different and somewhat bitter.

Yield 1

Number Of Ingredients 6

10 fresh mint leaves
½ lime, cut into 4 wedges
2 tablespoons white sugar, or to taste
1 cup ice cubes
1 ½ fluid ounces white rum
½ cup club soda

Steps:

  • Place mint leaves and 1 lime wedge into a sturdy glass. Use a muddler to crush the mint and lime to release the mint oils and lime juice. Add 2 more lime wedges and the sugar, and muddle again to release the lime juice. Do not strain the mixture. Fill the glass almost to the top with ice. Pour the rum over the ice, and fill the glass with carbonated water. Stir, taste, and add more sugar if desired. Garnish with the remaining lime wedge.

Yield Makes 1

Number Of Ingredients 5

3/4 ounce simple syrup
2 sprigs mint, plus more for serving
2 ounces white rum (we recommend BACARDÍ™ Superior)
3/4 ounce fresh lime juice
Club soda (for serving)

Steps:

  • Add simple syrup and 2 mint sprigs to a cocktail shaker and press with barspoon or back of a wooden spoon to release mint oils. Add rum and lime juice. Fill shaker with ice, cover, and shake vigorously until outside of shaker is very cold, about 20 seconds.
  • Strain cocktail through a Hawthorne strainer or a slotted spoon into a tall Collins glass filled with ice. Top off with club soda; garnish with more mint.

Tips:

  • Use fresh ingredients for the best flavor. This is especially important for the limes and mint.
  • Choose a good quality cachaça. Look for a cachaça that is at least 40% alcohol by volume (ABV).
  • Make sure your limes are ripe. Ripe limes are juicier and have a more intense flavor.
  • Muddle the limes and mint gently. You don't want to bruise the mint leaves too much, as this can release a bitter flavor.
  • Add the sugar syrup to taste. Start with a small amount and add more as needed.
  • Serve the mojito immediately over ice. This will help to keep the drink cold and refreshing.

Conclusion:

The Brazilian Mojito is a delicious and refreshing cocktail that is perfect for any occasion. It is easy to make and can be enjoyed by people of all ages. Whether you are hosting a party or just want to relax with a cold drink, the Brazilian Mojito is a great choice.
