Time 8h35m

Yield 8 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 14

1/2 cup dry navy beans or 1/2 cup great northern bean
1/2 cup dry black beans or 1/2 cup kidney bean
1/2 cup dried lima beans
1/2 cup dry garbanzo beans
1/2 cup dried split peas
1/2 lb ham, cut into bite sized cubes
1 cup chopped onion
1 cup diced carrot
1 teaspoon dried basil
1 teaspoon dried oregano
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
2 bay leaves
12 cups water

Steps:

  • Sort through and rinse beans; drain.
  • In a large saucepan bring beans and splitpeas along with 6 cups of water to a boil.
  • Boil for 10 minutes, then drain, rinse, and drain again.
  • Place the drained beans in the crockpot along with the ham, onions, carrots, basil, oregano, salt, pepper, bay leaves, and last 6 cups of water.
  • Cover crockpot and cook on low for 8-10 hours or on high for 4-5 hours.
  • Remove bay leaves and adjust seasoning for salt and pepper if necessary.

Tips:

  • Soak the beans overnight: This will help to reduce the cooking time and make the beans more digestible. If you don't have time to soak the beans overnight, you can quick-soak them by boiling them for 1 minute, then removing them from the heat and letting them sit for 1 hour.
  • Use a variety of beans: This will give your soup a more complex flavor and texture. Some good options include pinto beans, black beans, kidney beans, and navy beans.
  • Don't overcook the beans: Overcooked beans will become mushy and lose their flavor. Cook the beans just until they are tender, but still hold their shape.
  • Use a good quality ham: The ham is the star of this soup, so it's important to use a good quality one. Look for a ham that is well-marbled and has a good smoky flavor.
  • Add vegetables: Vegetables add flavor, color, and nutrition to the soup. Some good options include carrots, celery, onions, and potatoes.
  • Season the soup to taste: Add salt, pepper, and other seasonings to taste. You can also add a bay leaf or two for extra flavor.
  • Serve the soup with cornbread or crackers: Cornbread or crackers are the perfect accompaniment to this hearty soup.

Conclusion:

Calico ham and bean soup is a delicious and hearty soup that is perfect for a cold winter day. It is easy to make and can be tailored to your own taste preferences. So next time you're looking for a comforting and satisfying meal, give this soup a try!
