My family loves this! I have received a lot of compliments on this pie and it even placed at my county fair in 2010. Super yummy just the way it is or you can have it with a scoop of french vanilla ice cream while it is still warm.

1 bottle or jar caramel ice cream topping
Vanilla ice cream--optional

Steps:

Crimp edges. 3.Peel and slice apples and place in large bowl. Coat with lemon juice. 4.Mix white sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg together in small bowl and toss with apples until evenly covered. 5.Lay apples slightly overlapping around the pie crust, starting on the outside edge working inward. 6.Mix brown sugar, oats, cinnamon, vanilla and nuts together in small bowl until combined. 7.Sprinkle over apples. Dot top with butter. 8.Bake in preheated oven for 20-30 minutes until bubbly and pie crust edges are browned. Tips:

  • For a flaky crust, use a combination of butter and shortening. Grate the butter and shortening into the flour mixture, then use your fingers to work it in until it resembles coarse crumbs.
  • If you don't have time to make your own pie crust, you can use a store-bought crust. Just be sure to pre-bake it according to the package directions.
  • Use a variety of apples for a more complex flavor. Some good choices include Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, and Braeburn.
  • Peel and slice the apples thinly so they will cook evenly.
  • Add a sprinkle of cinnamon, nutmeg, and sugar to the apples for extra flavor.
  • If you are using a store-bought caramel sauce, be sure to heat it up before using it. This will make it easier to spread.
  • Serve the pie warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
