Best Sautéed Chinese Spinach is a vegetarian sauteed or pan fried spinach recipe, with baby spinach or kale, broth, soy sauce, garlic, ginger and more!

Categories     Side Dish

Number Of Ingredients 8

1 1/2 pounds regular or baby spinach or baby kale
1/3 cup chicken or vegetable broth
3 tablespoons soy sauce
1 - 2 tablespoons sugar (more or less to taste)
2 tablespoons garlic cloves, sliced or minced
1 tablespoon sesame oil
1 tablespoon cornstarch
3 tablespoons olive or another vegetable oil (more or less to taste)

Steps:

  • Wash and remove the stems from the spinach or kale, if necessary.
  • Combine the broth, soy sauce, sugar, cornstarch and sesame oil in a small bowl. Taste and if needed add salt. I only add salt if I use low sodium broth and soy sauce. If either have salt I don't generally add any.
  • Heat the vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat until it shimmers or when a drop of water flicked in it dances.
  • Add the garlic and stir. If garlic starts to brown you need to reduce your heat.
  • Quickly stir the soy mixture to make sure the cornstarch is totally dissolved. Add to the garlic in the skillet.
  • Simmer for a few minutes until mixture thickens.
  • Increase the heat, add the spinach and cook.
  • Stir, with a wooden spoon, until starting to wilt and totally coated in soy mixture, about a minute.
  • When serving, serve with a slotted spoon to reduce juices or serve juices on top of rice.
  • Enjoy!

Time 10m

Yield 3 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 5

10 ounces fresh Baby Spinach, cleaned
2 garlic cloves, minced (or to taste)
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 teaspoon sesame oil
1 tablespoon soy sauce (or to taste)

Steps:

  • Heat vegetable oil and sesame oil in a large pan.
  • Add garlic and cook briefly.
  • Add spinach and cook until the spinach is mostly wilted.
  • Add soy sauce to taste and continue cooking just until the spinach has all wilted.
  • Serve immediately.

Tips:

  • Selecting Fresh Spinach: Choose spinach leaves that are vibrant green, crisp, and free from wilting or yellowing.
  • Cleaning Spinach Properly: Before cooking, rinse the spinach thoroughly under cold running water to remove any dirt or debris.
  • Blanching Spinach: Blanching spinach helps preserve its color and nutrients. Submerge the leaves in boiling water for a few seconds, then immediately transfer them to an ice bath to stop the cooking process.
  • Quick Stir-Frying: When stir-frying spinach, cook it quickly over high heat to retain its texture and flavor. Overcooking can make it limp and mushy.
  • Seasoning and Sauces: Experiment with different seasonings and sauces to enhance the flavor of your spinach dishes. Soy sauce, garlic, ginger, sesame oil, and oyster sauce are popular choices.

Conclusion:

Chinese-style spinach is a versatile vegetable that can be enjoyed in various dishes. Its mild flavor and health benefits make it a popular choice among home cooks and restaurant chefs alike. Whether you prefer it stir-fried, steamed, or added to soups and salads, spinach offers a delightful culinary experience. So, embrace the simplicity and versatility of this leafy green and incorporate it into your meals to enjoy its nutritional value and delicious taste.
