OATMEAL CHIPPERS

Oatmeal Chippers image

This recipe was given to me by a friend many years ago. It's one of my favorite cookies - they're always a big hit at Christmas. If you make them as directed you get a slightly crunchy cookie. If you want a softer chewier cookie make them a little bigger and bake for only 10 minutes. Cooking time assumes baking 2 sheets (about 32 cookies) at a time.

Tips:

  • Use Old-Fashioned Rolled Oats: This will give the cookies a chewy texture, while instant or quick-cooking oats will make them too soft.
  • Brown the Butter: Browning the butter adds a nutty flavor to the cookies and makes them more chewy. To brown butter, melt it in a saucepan over medium heat, stirring constantly until it turns a light golden brown and smells fragrant.
  • Chill the Dough: Chilling the dough before baking helps the cookies hold their shape and prevents them from spreading too much. Chill the dough for at least 30 minutes, or up to overnight.
  • Use a Cookie Scoop: A cookie scoop helps you get evenly sized cookies and ensures that they bake evenly.
  • Bake the Cookies Until the Edges are Golden Brown: The centers of the cookies will still be soft when you take them out of the oven, but they will continue to cook as they cool. If you overbake them, they will be dry and crumbly.

Conclusion:

These chocolate oatmeal chippers are a delicious and easy-to-make treat that are perfect for any occasion. They are chewy, chocolatey, and packed with oats, making them a healthier alternative to traditional chocolate chip cookies. With just a few simple ingredients and a little bit of time, you can enjoy these delicious cookies at home.
