A classic version of this dish was shared with me years ago. This is is my adaptation to more local ingredients. If you don't like beer, you can replace it with milk and it will still taste great. Serve over toasted bread or English muffins.

Tips for Making Crab Rarebit:

  • Use fresh crab meat. Fresh crab meat will give your rarebit the best flavor. If you can't find fresh crab meat, you can use frozen or canned crab meat, but the flavor will not be as good.
  • Use a good quality cheese. The cheese is the main ingredient in crab rarebit, so it's important to use a good quality cheese that melts well. A sharp cheddar cheese is a good choice, but you can also use other cheeses, such as Gruyère, Fontina, or Parmesan.
  • Don't overcook the rarebit. Crab rarebit is a quick and easy dish to make, but it's important to not overcook it. Overcooked rarebit will be tough and rubbery.
  • Serve crab rarebit immediately. Crab rarebit is best served immediately after it is made. The longer it sits, the more the cheese will thicken and the less flavorful it will be.

Conclusion:

Crab rarebit is a delicious and easy-to-make dish that is perfect for any occasion. It can be served as an appetizer, main course, or side dish. With its rich, cheesy flavor and tender crab meat, crab rarebit is sure to be a hit with everyone who tries it.
