RED-HOT APPLE BUTTER CROCK POT

Red-Hot Apple Butter Crock Pot image

This can be made in the crockpot or on the stove. The stove is quicker, but you really need to watch closely for burning. You can use fresh apples if available, or use canned applesauce. If using fresh apples you'll need to peel, core and cook the apples until soft, then process in a food processor for a few minutes. The red hots give it a little kick.

Provided by Clifford Boren

Categories     Fruit

Time 2h15m

Yield 8-10 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 4

8 apples, granny smiths are good
3/4 cup red cinnamon candies
1/2 cup sugar substitute, such as equal
3/4 cup water

Steps:

  • Core the apples, but it isn't necessary to peel them.
  • I like the texture of having the peels in the sauce.
  • Dice them very fine.
  • Tumble everything into a large pot and bring to a boil.
  • Reduce to the slowest simmer you can arrange on your stove so the sauce won't burn on the bottom of the pot.
  • Cover, stirring occasionally, until you reach the consistency you want.
  • The longer, the finer texture.
  • I usually cook it about 3 hours.

RED HOT BAKED APPLES ALA CROCK POT

Red Hot Baked Apples Ala Crock Pot image

I love the ease of crock pot cooking & this is a recipe given to me by susiequsie from "The Best Slow Cooker Cookbook Ever". I eliminated cinnamon from the original recipe, changed the ingredient amounts to suit preparing 8 apples & added a little something extra to "kick it up a notch". The apples can be served (hot or cold) as a side dish with a pork meal or a dessert with vanilla ice cream ... & be sure to use the yummy apple-flavored red sauce you'll get.

Time 30m

Yield 8 apples, 8 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 6

8 medium apples
1/3 cup sugar
1/4 cup raisins
2 tablespoons butter
1/4 cup red cinnamon candies
1/2 cup water

Steps:

  • Core apples at the stem end, taking care to make a wide opening & not go completely through the bottom. Then peel skin down 1 in from the top.
  • Mix sugar, raisins & cinnamon red hots.
  • Stuff apples tightly with the mixture (mounding at the opening as there will be ample stuffing mix) & dot each opening with butter.
  • Pour water into crock pot, add any leftover stuffing mixture to the water & add apples.
  • Cover & cook on low 7-8 hrs, medium for 6 hrs or high for 3-4 hours (NOTE: Cooking time may vary & I suggest fork testing the apples 1 hr ahead of the time you expect them to be finished).
