DECORATED CUT-OUT COOKIES WITHOUT FROSTING

Decorated Cut-Out Cookies Without Frosting image

I saw this idea on a Baking/Decorating show on television. I thought it was a wonderful idea and wanted to share it. For ease of explanation I am going to tell you how to do this as if you were making Christmas tree cookies. Of course you could make whatever shape cookies you want and color however you wish. I have used a variation of a recipe from Sandra Lee's Semi-homemade show. However you can use any of your favorite cut-out cookie recipes or even premade refrigerated dough. It is the instructions for cutting and decorating which are unique.

Time 1h5m

Yield 12-15 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 7

1 (17 1/2 ounce) package refrigerated sugar cookie dough
1/3 cup cream cheese, softened in microwave for 45 seconds
1 egg
1 teaspoon lemon extract
3 tablespoons cake flour
food coloring
milk

Steps:

  • In a large bowl, stir together all ingredients until they form a ball.
  • Chill for 30 minutes.
  • Remove 1/4 to 1/3 of the dough and set it aside in a sealed container.
  • Color the remaining cookie dough with green food coloring to desired color shade.
  • Roll cookie dough onto a parchment lined cookie sheet.
  • Cut trees with a tree shaped cookie cutter and remove the outside pieces of dough. (knead outside pieces into a ball so that you can redo this same process on the next cookie sheet).
  • Taking out the portion which you set aside in step #2, divide it up into small groups depending on the number of colors you want your balls/garland to be.
  • Color each small group with food coloring and add tiny amounts of milk until it gets to the consistency that it can be piped through a pastry/decorating bag.
  • Pipe your balls/and or garland colored cookie dough unto the unbaked trees. Bake in a preheated oven to 375 degrees Farenheit for about 12 minutes.
  • You will have beautifully decorated cookies without the added frosting and everyone will wonder how you did it.

Tips for Perfectly Decorated Cut-Out Cookies Without Frosting:

- **Choose the right dough**: A firm dough that holds its shape well is ideal for cut-out cookies. A dough that is too soft will spread in the oven and lose its shape, while a dough that is too dry will be difficult to roll out and cut. - **Chill the dough before rolling it out**: This will help to prevent the dough from sticking to the rolling pin and will also help to keep the cookies from spreading in the oven. - **Roll out the dough evenly**: Use a rolling pin to roll out the dough to a thickness of about 1/8 inch. If the dough is too thick, the cookies will be too dense, and if it is too thin, the cookies will be too crispy. - **Use sharp cookie cutters**: Sharp cookie cutters will give you clean, precise cuts. Dull cookie cutters will drag and tear the dough, resulting in ragged edges. - **Decorate the cookies before baking**: This will help to prevent the decorations from melting or running in the oven. You can use a variety of decorations, such as sprinkles, sanding sugar, nonpareils, or even edible glitter. - **Bake the cookies according to the recipe instructions**: Over-baking will make the cookies dry and crumbly, while under-baking will leave them soft and gooey. - **Let the cookies cool completely before serving**: This will help to prevent them from breaking or crumbling. ###

Conclusion:

With a little planning and effort, you can create beautiful and delicious cut-out cookies without frosting. These cookies are perfect for any occasion, from birthdays to holidays to everyday snacks. So next time you're in the mood for something sweet, give these recipes a try!
