BBQ BAKED BEANS

BBQ Baked Beans image

BBQ baked beans are a summer staple. This shortcut version relies on ordinary canned baked beans, which we dress up with fresh peppers, onions, cider vinegar and barbecue sauce. The sweet and tangy side dish is perfect for a summer barbecue, picnic, potluck or weeknight dinner. The beans taste even better the next day, so they can be prepared ahead of time and reheated or served at room temperature.

Time 1h20m

Yield 6 servings

Number Of Ingredients 12

8 slices bacon (about 8 ounces), cut into 1/2-inch pieces
1 medium yellow onion, diced
1 green bell pepper, seeded and diced
Two 28-ounce cans baked beans
1 cup barbecue sauce
1/4 cup molasses
1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1/3 cup packed dark brown sugar
2 teaspoons yellow mustard powder
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
  • Heat an oven-proof heavy-bottom pot or Dutch oven over medium heat. Add the bacon and cook, stirring often, until the fat has started to render and the bacon is beginning to crisp, about 5 minutes. Add the onions and bell pepper and continue to cook, stirring often, until the vegetables are slightly softened, about 3 minutes.
  • Stir in the canned beans, barbecue sauce, molasses, vinegar, Worcestershire, brown sugar, mustard powder, cayenne, 1 teaspoon salt and several grinds of black pepper. Bring to a simmer and let cook over low heat, stirring occasionally, until the sauce has thickened slightly, about 5 minutes.
  • Transfer the pot to the oven and bake (uncovered) until the sauce thickens and the beans on top begin to brown, about 40 minutes. Remove from the oven and let cool for at least 15 minutes before serving warm or at room temperature.

I came up with this recipe after having made some bourbon baked beans and seeing a recipe for cola baked beans and I thought: Why not combine the two?

Time 3h37m

Yield 8

Number Of Ingredients 12

½ cup brown sugar
1 tablespoon ground paprika
1 teaspoon dry mustard
¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 (12 fl oz) can caffeinated pepper-type soda (such as Dr Pepper®)
¾ cup ketchup
¼ cup Worcestershire sauce
8 slices bacon
1 large onion, finely chopped
1 clove garlic, minced
¼ cup bourbon
2 (16 ounce) cans baked beans with pork

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  • Mix brown sugar, paprika, mustard, and cayenne pepper together in a bowl. Whisk in pepper soda, ketchup, and Worcestershire sauce until brown sugar is dissolved.
  • Cut 4 slices of bacon into small strips. Cook and stir in a large Dutch oven over medium heat until almost crispy, 3 to 5 minutes. Transfer to a bowl, reserving bacon grease.
  • Stir onion into the bacon grease in the Dutch oven; cook and stir until soft, 3 to 5 minutes. Add garlic; cook and stir for 1 minute. Pour in bourbon, stirring to scrape up browned bits off the bottom with a wooden spoon. Stir bacon strips back in.
  • Pour brown sugar mixture and baked beans into the Dutch oven. Simmer until beans are heated through, about 15 minutes. Arrange remaining 4 slices of bacon on top of the beans.
  • Bake in the preheated oven, covered, until beans are bubbly and sauce is syrupy, about 3 hours.

DR PEPPER BBQ SAUCE

My family is stationed in Italy with my husband, Lieutenant William Robert Blackman. William grew up in Memphis, Tennessee, and I'm from Texas, so the dish that spells "home" for us is a good ol' barbecue. Time 40m

Yield 10

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 pound ground beef
1 small onion, minced
2 tablespoons dry mesquite flavored seasoning mix
2 (28 ounce) cans baked beans (such as Bush's Original®)
¼ cup molasses
¾ cup brown sugar
¾ cup barbeque sauce
2 teaspoons dry mustard powder
2 pinches cayenne pepper, or to taste

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  • In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef, onion, and mesquite seasoning until the meat is no longer pink, breaking it up into crumbles as it cooks, about 10 minutes. Drain excess grease, and transfer the meat mixture to a large baking dish. Stir in the baked beans, molasses, brown sugar, barbeque sauce, dry mustard powder, and cayenne pepper, and mix until any small lumps of brown sugar have dissolved.
  • Bake in the preheated oven until the beans are bubbling and the flavors have blended, about 20 minutes.

Tips:

  • Use high-quality ingredients for the best flavor. Choose beans that are plump and free of blemishes, and use fresh vegetables and herbs.
  • Don't skimp on the spices. The spices in this recipe are what give it its delicious flavor. If you don't have all of the spices listed, you can substitute similar ones. For example, you could use chili powder instead of cayenne pepper, or paprika instead of smoked paprika.
  • Cook the beans until they are tender but still hold their shape. Overcooked beans will become mushy and lose their flavor.
  • Let the beans cool slightly before serving. This will help them to thicken and develop their flavor.

Conclusion:

Dr. Pepper BBQ Baked Beans are a delicious and easy side dish that is perfect for any occasion. They are made with simple ingredients and can be tailored to your own taste. Whether you like your beans sweet, savory, or spicy, this recipe has something for everyone. So next time you are looking for a tasty and easy side dish, give Dr. Pepper BBQ Baked Beans a try.
