TURKEY CHOW MEIN WITH ALMONDS

Turkey Chow Mein with Almonds image

Categories     Rice     turkey     Stir-Fry     Quick & Easy     Almond     Cabbage     Gourmet

Yield Serves 2

Number Of Ingredients 13

2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1/2 onion, sliced
4 cups sliced Napa cabbage
1 cup sliced celery
1/2 teaspoon sugar
3/4 cup chicken broth
1/4 cup water
1 tablespoon soy sauce
1 teaspoon Oriental sesame oil
1 tablespoon cornstarch dissolved in 2 tablespoons cold water
2 cups diced cooked turkey
cooked rice as an accompaniment
1/4 cup slivered almonds, toasted lightly

Steps:

  • In a large heavy skillet heat the vegetable oil until it is hot but not smoking and in it, stir-fry the onion, the cabbage, and the celery for 3 minutes, or until the cabbage is wilted. Add the sugar, the broth, the water, the soy sauce, and the sesame oil and simmer the mixture, covered, for 3 minutes. Stir the cornstarch mixture, stir it into the vegetable mixture, and bring the liquid to a boil. Stir in the turkey and simmer the chow mein until it is heated through. Serve the chow mein over the rice and sprinkle with the almonds.

Tips:

  • Prep Ingredients in Advance: Before you start cooking, measure and prep all of the ingredients. This will help you stay organized and ensure you have everything you need on hand.
  • Use Fresh Vegetables: Fresh vegetables give the chow mein a vibrant flavor and texture. If possible, use vegetables that are in season.
  • Use a Wok If You Have One: A wok is the traditional utensil for cooking chow mein. It allows you to cook the noodles and vegetables quickly and evenly.
  • Cook the Noodles Properly: Make sure to cook the noodles according to the package instructions. Overcooked noodles will become mushy and ruin the dish.
  • Don't Overcrowd the Wok: When cooking the noodles and vegetables, don't overcrowd the wok. This will prevent them from cooking evenly.
  • Add the Sauce Gradually: Start by adding a small amount of sauce and then gradually add more until you reach the desired flavor.
  • Serve Immediately: Chow mein is best served immediately after cooking. This will ensure that the noodles are still hot and the vegetables are still crisp.

Conclusion:

Turkey chow mein is a delicious and easy-to-make dish that is perfect for a weeknight meal. It is packed with flavor and nutrients and can be customized to your liking. With a few simple tips, you can make a delicious turkey chow mein that your whole family will love.
