Yield 6 bowls

Number Of Ingredients 15

2 pounds lean ground beef
1 (46 fluid ounce) can tomato juice
1 (29 ounce) can tomato sauce
1 large chopped onion
2 cups chopped celery
2 chopped green bell pepper
1/3 cup chili powder
3 teaspoons ground cumin
3 teaspoons garlic powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ground black pepper
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1 teaspoon white sugar
1 teaspoon ground cayenne pepper
2 cups canned red beans, drained and rinsed

Steps:

  • 1. Place ground beef in a large, deep skillet. Cook over medium-high heat until evenly brown. Drain, crumble, and set aside. 2. Add all ingredients to a large kettle. Bring to boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 1 to 1 1/2 hours, stirring occasionally.

Tips:

  • Use a variety of beans: Different beans offer distinct flavors and textures, adding depth to your chili. Consider using a mix of kidney beans, black beans, pinto beans, and Great Northern beans.
  • Roast your own spices: Toasting spices like cumin, coriander, and chili powder enhances their flavor and aroma. Simply spread them on a baking sheet and roast in a preheated oven for a few minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Don't be afraid of heat: Chili should have a bit of a kick, so don't be shy with the hot peppers. If you're worried about making it too spicy, start with a small amount and add more to taste.
  • Use a combination of meats: Ground beef and pork are classic chili ingredients, but you can also add other meats like chicken, turkey, or lamb. This adds richness and complexity to the flavor.
  • Simmer for a long time: The longer you simmer your chili, the better the flavors will develop. Aim for at least 2 hours, or even longer if you have the time.

Conclusion:

Flatlander chili is a delicious and versatile dish that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. With its hearty ingredients and customizable flavor profile, it's a perfect meal for any occasion. Whether you're a chili connoisseur or just looking for a comforting and satisfying meal, give this recipe a try. You won't be disappointed!
