CRAB SALAD

Courtesy of Central Market in Houston. They had just freshly made it in the store. I haven't made this yet, but with the holidays coming up (Yikes!), this sounded like something nice to serve at a gathering.

Categories     Spreads

Time 2h30m

Yield 4-6 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 11

1 lb fresh cooked crabmeat, picked clean of the shell
2 avocados, diced
1 roasted poblano pepper, chopped
1 roasted red pepper, chopped
3 scallions, chopped
1 tablespoon minced garlic
1 tablespoon olive oil
1/4 bunch fresh cilantro, sprigged and chopped
1 lime, juice of
salt
cayenne pepper

Steps:

  • Combine all ingredients in a bowl, taking care not to break up the crab meat too much. Refrigerate until serving time.
  • If you wanted to make this easier, you could use canned crab meat, roasted red bell pepper from a jar, etc.
  • I usually remove the seeds from any hot pepper I'm using, as that is where the heat really lies, and I don't want it too hot for my kiddos.
  • Cook time is chill time. I had to estimate on prep time because it depends on if you roast your own peppers or not.

Tips:

  • Fresh crab is best: Using the freshest crab you can find will give your salad the best flavor.
  • Cook the crab properly: Be careful not to overcook the crab, as this will make it tough. Steaming or boiling the crab for a few minutes is usually sufficient.
  • Use a variety of vegetables: This will add color, texture, and flavor to your salad. Some good choices include celery, cucumber, red onion, and avocado.
  • Choose a good dressing: The dressing is what will really bring your salad together. A mayonnaise-based dressing is a classic choice, but you can also try a vinaigrette or a creamy dressing made with sour cream or yogurt.
  • Season to taste: Be sure to season your salad with salt and pepper to taste. You can also add other seasonings, such as lemon juice, fresh herbs, or Old Bay seasoning.

Conclusion:

Crab salad is a delicious and versatile dish that can be enjoyed as an appetizer, main course, or side dish. With the right ingredients and a little bit of care, you can easily make a crab salad that will impress your friends and family. So next time you're looking for a seafood dish to try, give crab salad a try. You won't be disappointed!
