GRANDMA'S GERMAN CHOCOLATE CAKE

Grandma's German Chocolate Cake image

This is my grandma's recipe for German Chocolate Cake. This was all of us kid's favorite for birthdays. I made this for my husband on our first date on his birthday, and it's a tradition in our family now. We always use black walnuts, but you can use English walnuts. The hot water sounds weird, but that's the way my family has made it for years.

Tips:

  • Use room-temperature ingredients. This will help the cake batter mix more evenly and produce a lighter, fluffier cake.
  • Don't overmix the batter. Overmixing can develop the gluten in the flour, which will make the cake tough. Mix just until the ingredients are combined.
  • Bake the cake in a preheated oven. This will help the cake rise evenly and prevent it from sinking in the middle.
  • Let the cake cool completely before frosting it. This will help the cake to hold its shape and prevent the frosting from melting.
  • Store the cake in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days, or in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.
