Tips:

  • Choose the right macaroni. Elbow macaroni is the classic choice for mac and cheese, but you can also use other shapes like shells, penne, or rotini. If you're using a smaller pasta shape, be sure to cook it for less time so it doesn't get overcooked.
  • Use a good quality cheese. The type of cheese you use will make a big difference in the flavor of your mac and cheese. Use a sharp cheddar for a classic flavor, or try a blend of cheeses like cheddar, mozzarella, and Parmesan for a more complex flavor.
  • Cook the macaroni al dente. Al dente means "to the tooth" in Italian, and it refers to the ideal texture for pasta. The pasta should be cooked through but still have a slight bite to it.
  • Make a roux. A roux is a mixture of butter and flour that is used to thicken sauces and gravies. It's also used in mac and cheese to give it a smooth and creamy texture.
  • Add milk and cheese gradually. When you're adding the milk and cheese to the roux, do it gradually and whisk constantly. This will help prevent the sauce from curdling.
  • Season to taste. Once you've added the milk and cheese, taste the sauce and season it with salt and pepper as needed. You can also add other seasonings like garlic powder, onion powder, or paprika.
  • Top with breadcrumbs or grated Parmesan cheese. Before baking the mac and cheese, top it with breadcrumbs or grated Parmesan cheese. This will give it a golden brown crust and a delicious flavor.
