2 pounds potatoes, peeled and cut into 1/2-inch slices
1/2 cup ketchup
1 tablespoon bacon grease
1 teaspoon salt

  • Place all ingredients in a saucepan and cover with water. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, and let simmer 45 minutes to 1 hour.

A family tradition for many, many years. Thanksgiving would not be the same without this wonderful, moist dressing. We don't cook it in the turkey, but in a separate pan. Adjust the amounts of turkey stock and savory to taste.

8 potatoes, peeled and chopped
6 slices bread
2 stalks celery, minced
1 large onion, diced
½ cup butter, melted
2 cups turkey stock
1 teaspoon dried sage
2 tablespoons crushed dried summer savory
salt and pepper to taste

Steps:

  • Place potatoes in a large saucepan with enough water to cover, and bring to a boil. Boil 15 minutes, until tender but firm. Drain and mash.
  • Lightly toast bread, and tear into cubes. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Lightly grease a medium baking dish.
  • In a large bowl, mix mashed potatoes, toasted bread, celery, onion, butter, turkey stock, sage, and savory. Season with salt and pepper.
  • Transfer potato mixture to the prepared baking dish. Bake 30 minutes in the preheated oven, or until lightly browned.

Every family seems to have their own favorite dressing recipe that becomes a tradition, and this is ours. It came from Grandma, who passed it down to my mother. Now our children have carried it into their kitchens. This is truly a good old-fashioned recipe. -Norma Howland, Joliet, Illinois

1 pound bulk pork sausage
1 cup 2% milk
7 cups coarse dry bread crumbs
1 cup diced celery
2 large eggs
2 to 3 tablespoons minced fresh parsley
2 tablespoons diced onion
1/2 teaspoon salt or salt to taste

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350°. In a large skillet, brown sausage. Drain sausage, discarding drippings. Meanwhile, in a small saucepan, heat milk over medium heat until bubbles form around sides of pan. In a large bowl, combine sausage, milk and remaining ingredients., Transfer to a greased 2-qt. baking dish. Cover and bake until lightly browned, about 40 minutes.

1 large onion, chopped
3/4 cup chopped celery
1/4 cup butter, cubed
1/4 cup turkey or chicken broth
8 slices day-old white bread, crusts removed and cubed
3 cups mashed potatoes
1 egg, beaten
1-1/2 teaspoons poultry seasoning
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

Steps:

  • In a small skillet, saute onion and celery in butter until tender. Remove from the heat; stir in broth. In a large bowl, combine bread cubes, potatoes, egg and seasonings. Stir in onion mixture. Transfer to a greased 2-qt. baking dish. Cover and bake at 325° for 50-60 minutes or until a thermometer reads 160°.
